I've noticed that as it gets later at night, some of the arms (are they called that?) Near the bottom get really stringy looking, and it doesn't seem very "packed" together. I'm just sure if I'm doing a good job taking care of it or what to expect. I've had it for about 3 weeks.

I think what your describing are the sweeper tentacles of your hammer extending out from its skeleton. It’s a feeding and defense mechanism characteristic of many corals. Sometimes, strong water flow will cause them to extend much in the same way as with Galaxy coral.

I think the flow looks okay, can maybe be turned down a bit. Many of the tips and tentacles look transparent. What kind of lighting are you using and are you dosing any elements to the system?

I'm not dosng, my calcium is high (560), mag is high (1440). My alk is 9.1, ph 8.2. Nitrates at 1, nitrites and Ammonia 0.

I have 2 AI 32HDs and rented a par meter from BRS, and that area is about 125 PAR. It's mid tank, center left.

Do you think it's getting too much light?

PAR is good, calcium is way to high needs to come down, I would try a 25% water change. Your nutrients are to low. Could be what is causing the issue. Generally around 5-10 ppm nitrate is ideal and for mostly LPS systems, and about 0.06-0.10 phosphate.

I would consider doing a decent size water change if your new salt water mixes at lower calc and mag.

Although I don’t know if high level would cause this reaction. I know low mag (1100) made my one hammer start to fade in colors but it was still fully opened. I raised mag to 1350 and it bounced back within two weeks.
