Is Trident stand alone or does it need Apex?

Im looking into Alkalinity Automation for my new tank (possibly, hopefully), i dont want a controller as i was and still am sick to death of GHL profilux 4, so just looking at Alkalinity automation, I hear good and bad things about every machine going, but can you tell me if the Trident is stand alone or needs Apex?, i think it needs Apex in which case its off my list but can somebody confirm please.

Yes needs the newer version of the Apex base module to work
