Hi, I actually posted another thread on the two tank-raised clownfish that didn't make it through my quarantine process.

This thread is basically to ask what could have gone wrong.

There are a number of things that may have contributed to their demise, but the one that tends to stick out (now that I've cleaned out the QT tank) is that I was using old salt (9+ years old). I had some leftover Tropic Marin Pro (in a box) that I started using because I ran out of my Reef Crystals which was from a couple of months ago. The salt looked okay, but I did notice that it left a lot of chips in the mixing bucket. When I used for the QT I didn't notice anything unusual in terms of the water clarity or anything. But today, when I cleaned out the QT (because both fish had died) I did notice a whole lot of particulate matter. Since both of the clownfish seemed to be suffering from respiratory issues I wonder if those particulates were causing severe irritation, so much so that they refused to eat. I tried and checked for a number of other issues that could have caused the breathing issues including flukes with a FW dip, and ammonia poisoning through rigorous testing and water changes (in the two weeks I had them I did five 33%+ waterchanges). I've been using the salt in my DT, but I haven't noticed any adverse effects. Then again I only have some snails and hermits with a bunch of live rock.

I've used old clumped up salt that's been exposed to air but it was nowhere near nine years old. I doubt even then it would negatively impact the clowns. It could be the clowns didn't acclimate well to the new tank or they had something Wrong with them like a parasite or ammonia burn
