If my sand has invertebrates crawling all over, do I need to vacuum the sand or can I just take a pitcher and scoop up 10% of the water each week?

You can get away with not doing it. I never do. But there are benefits. It will look cleaner if you do and it helps kick up things that’ve settled so they can be filtered out. But I don’t think you have to do it at all

Some sand sizes can collect detritus and start adding nitrates and phosphates to your water column. That being said no you don’t have to vacuum your sand if you don’t want to.

Clean up crew can really help with that on a day to day basis, but they won’t get everything (after all, they have to excrete, too). I do like to occasionally filter my sand for the same reasons mentioned here (general cleanliness, can help with undesirable nutrients, etc).

I gave a quick vacuum for the first time last weekend and honestly felt like I wasted my time.

I have a bunch of conches and nassarius snails and there was virtually no detritus in the bucket when I did the vac.

Tank going on 3 years old.

Not going to bother in future.
