Is your RO unit fresh and ready for this summer?

FYI, the rivers, lakes, and reservoirs are at an all time low for this time of year. That means there is more chemical treatment in our drinking water thus more stuff we don;t want to get into our tanks.

I just wanted to give a heads up; perhaps some fresh per filters and membranes are in order (should be changed at least yearly anyway). We are at mild drought now, but if it gets any worse then this will be more important.

No I meant membranes too. Membranes are measured in gallons, not time....and best guess of time versus your usage is only under the best conditions...meaning you back flush them regularly (I have a back flush valve on mine and still forget), keep them under pressure (not discsonnected), and don;t let them dry out....so..every year a good idea to change it unless your able to really follow the regimen. Your TDS meter will be a tell tale too...I use that more than anything..but mileage will vary and 3-5 years would be a stretch.

RO membrane 3-5 yrs in a hypothetical world. in real world 1-2 yrs max, especially with the BRS ones. Even less for people that do not properly take care of their pre filters or backwash the RO properly.

DI or carbon lasting a year? Depending on your water, these will probably need changing a lot more frequently than that. Like andy said, check you TDS meter for the real time to change them. I'm lucky if my DI lasts 3 months.

Ok yea I was goin off recomended for membrane. But my di has lasted a long time I've had my unit for almost a year and still get 3 tds from ro and 0 from DI. And I go through 1g+ per day and filled a 150 , 180 and 40 plus water changes. My unit was used also but barely

Yournresults are not typical, so glad you got that long out of them. I get a year out of my membranes, however i use 2 membranes and reclaim more water because i make Alot....amd like Rick, DI every 3-5 minths.

My DI resin lasts about 9-12 months. I have a dual in-line TDS meter with one probe on each side of the DI. this is the best way to monitor the membrane and the resin. Color changing BRS resin is my favorite. I ordered some other stuff and it turned gold very quickly, but still gave a zero reading.


andy, I like you also forget to flush the membrane regularly. as of now, I am going toru about 55 gallons of water a month for top off. this is HALF of what I used with the halides.

I use an inline TDS meter and I swear I thought it was super off. I thought "no way my membrane and DI resin has lasted this long." But I made TDS test solutions in the lab and then tested the meter...sure enough the dang thing is reading accurately. I'm just waiting for that membrane to blow though.

I use BRS for the DI stuff but I still use Spectrapure for the membrane. Membranes aren't expensive anymore...not like they used to be.

I had to laugh a bit at the article. 3.2 feet low. The main reservoir for water back in Austin TX is currently about 40 feet low and was over 50 feet low over the winter. I bet it will hit 60 feet low before the end of summer!

There are only 2 main companies that produce membranes. Dow filmtec is the most popular.
It really does not matter where you buy from. Unless you pay extra for the hand tested spectra pure one
