issue keeping snails alive.

edit~~. found guy that sells 300 cerith for $32.00 on Amazon

I remember somebody saying some of the ceriths for sale on EBay and Amazon come from the Carolinas. They are a cooler water snail than what we want to keep in our tanks and don't survive very well.

I have yet to find anyone that has had a problem with anything that John at Reefcleaners.org has ever sent. His prices are good (they aren't ebay prices), but I will only order cleanup crews from him.

+1 here! nothing but good experiences ordering from him.

Mine are Nassarius, not Cerith, not sure if that makes a difference here, but they've been in the tank 2 months with no problems.

i've gotten 2 orders from him, and they have yet to last over 3 days, i've tried a few from the local store, and bought some from a local reefer and none of them have lasted more that 3 days as well. this is what makes me believe it is something in my tank. i have no problem with the snails John sells, i just don't want to waste money, and kill a bunch of snails in an attempt to see if what ever it was is gone. i'm going to do another water change when i get home, just to try and help.

You said you also had a plate die. Were it not for the fact that the hermits and shrimp appear to me doing well, I would seriously suspect copper. If it were me I would run a test for it just to rule it out.

before the plate died i had a leather, palys, zoas, and Xenia that were doing great. the plate was the last addition, and up until he died, everything was doing great. he died and everything else died within a couple days.

Did the leather, palys, zoas, and Xenia also die? Did you have an exterminator treat your house? Did you set off a "bomb" to fumigate the house for fleas? Did someone cleaning use any type of spray? Did a pump or powerhead crack open and expose the copper windings? Something different happened! Think what it could have been.

the plate only lasted a couple weeks after being added. we woke up one morning and he wasn't do too well. i tried to get him out, but it was too late. everything but the fish, crabs, and shrimp died within a couple days. all the softies, the snails, and a feather duster. we've never had the house sprayed on the inside, and nothing at that time had changed. the snails in my fresh water tanks (we have a 39 in the living room, and a 14 cube in my sons room) are all doing great. all water comes from the same source.

i wonder if the death of the plate caused the rest to die, because nothing in my household changed. all bathrooms are upstairs, no chemicals are stored downstairs, and we have never had an exterminator.
i've read several stories of fungia death almost crashing tanks, and some people even loosing fish due to the plate dying.

I've never heard of that, but there is obviously some connection there. I've had plates die without problems.

i don't know if it's because my water volume is so low (about 50 gallon total between tank and sump) that it cause the issues or if there was something under lying. looking back, it's been over a year since i've had any major die off, except the snail issue, and i haven't tried them in many many months.

I suspect that you did not test the water for ammonia when the plate died. Dying fish or coral can elevate the ammonia level and start a chain reaction.
As for the more recent snail death, I don't have any idea. Fresh water snails and fish seem to be a lot tougher than salt water snails. At least that's my experience. Are you using tap water or RODI water for your salt water tank?

So far it looks like they are all still alive! If they are all still roaming around Wednesday I'll place an order with reefcleaners.

Great news. Was one a nassarius as I suspected? I grabbed it quickly from a bare bottom tank that holds my extra live rock so I didn't get a good look at the proboscis.
