Hey guys. Ive been experiencing some weird behavior from my coral the last few days and am at a loss as to what to do. Before I explain, I need to backtrack a few days to an incident that took place with my tank. My 29 gal standard sits just outside my kitchen, and a few nights ago my girlfriend burned some food and caught it on fire. Lots of smoke, part of my tank is open top, yikes. Long story short, I woke up to my coral all shriveled up and one of my clownfish dead. I proceeded to do a big water change (50%), then smaller ones for the following days (15%). Since then, the majority of my corals have opened up and havent shown any signs of issue. My issue here is my Acan frag, Green Hairy Mushroom Frag, Trumpet Coral Frag, and my Red Prism Favia ( I believe this was being stung by a Hollywood Stunner Chalice, which has been removed) are acting very strange. I will attach pics for reference. I cant decide if im crazy and theyre all just behaving in a normal cycle that Im unaware of (this is my first tank). The tank has been up for around 3.5 months and shows o readings of ammonia or nitrite, with a 5 ppm reading of nitrate. I tested my Alk and Calcium which showed a 10 and 425 ppm reading respectively. Im at a loss, what do I do? I have some Cyano Bacteria growing as it is a new tank and thought some could be do to this, but I have no clue. Maybe I need to keep my hands out of my tank and let them be for a few days. Ive been moving things around lately to see if the coral needed a placement change. Here are the pics, please help!
I have other corals such as Zoanthids, Green Sinularia, and a Toadstool Leather that are behaving completely normal. Great color and extending.

I should also add that since the smoke incident, I have added a Tailspot Blenny and he is thriving. I would think if my water had some chemical in it then hed have died pretty quickly. Tank only has 1 Snowflake Clown and the Blenny.

Not sure why I cant get any replies. Im having some serious issue and could use some help

I’m not the best guy to help you, but I do know we need to get this to the “emergency” forum which is monitored closely by people that can help.

I would continue to do a series of small water changes. Don't do to large, especially on a smaller tank, it has the potential cause a mini-cycle which will upset everything even more. You can also try running some carbon to help absorb anything that may potentially still be in the tank. Also lower all the coral into the sandbed so they can recover if possible.

Some specifics would be good. Firstly:

Have you tested your water? What are your readings and have they changed since the smoke?

Big water changes can cause a swing in water parameters. Did you match sg, temp, use same salt you always use?

How long has you tank been set up? Rock looks like it hasn’t had much coralline growth which suggests a young tank.

I agree. Carbon and water changes.

Yes I stated above that my readings are 0,0 and 5 ppm. They have stayed the exact same since the smoke. I think I keep subconsciously blaming the smoke incident, but I dont know if its really whats going on. My “big” water change was really 8 gallons of the 30 ish gallons including refugium. I matched everything exactly and used the same salt. If it were a major water quality issue, I would thinking my clown and new blenny would be dead. 75% of my coral is perfectly normal, which is why im so confused. My favia went back to normal yesterday, and just started showing these issues overnight/today. Also, my toadstool leather was initially upset and has since recovered fully. Im driving myself mad trying to figure this out. Long story short and to sum it up, my Softies are doing fine (minus the green hairy mushroom in pic), and the lps are having issues.

I also would run carbon to rule out a toxin issue. Maybe one of your corals got mad and released something that’s affecting the rest?

This may sound like a dumb question, but without a filter, should I just drop some carbon in a pouch into the column and let it float?

Is this a biocube or a regular glass square aquarium

Now thats its brought up, I think the idea that one or more of coral released something upon stress from the smoke and is causing what Im seeing. That makes the most sense out of anything ive heard/researched

I do have a HON refugium that I could place carbon into if thats viable

In my opinion, I'm thinking that the tanks is still too new for the LPS. I've experience this when started my 20g and rushed in added LPS to early when the tank is cycled. They all end up dying.

Ive considered this as well. I didnt know much better when the dude at my LFS gave me a deal on it. Live and learn I guess. Im still confused about the Green Hairy Mushroom (for all I know its behavior is normal) and the Acan.

Is there a specific kind of carbon? And can anyone attest to me just dropping it in the column (in a bag of course) or putting it in the refugium?

Yes, I have that problem too when it comes to a deal (LOL). I would do what everyone say and run some carbon to clear out toxin if there is any.

Any opinion on how to run it? In refugium or just put the bag in the water?
