Issues with my skimz skimmer

I have the skimz sm251 on my very lightly stocked 180. It runs inconsistently, will be bubbling great, then suddenly the skim will drop. The skimmer is definitely broken in, and the water level is consistent. Any ideas?

You are over skimming big time. That skimmer is rated for 280g light stock. So you dont have the bioload to have a constant foam in the chamber. So what happens is your bioload hits a peak and then it skims till there isn't a bioload anymore.

You could probably run that thing on a timer at night for 6-8 hours and keep it off the rest of the time.

Right that makes sense. Tank is still very young, and the plan is to overstock it so I kind of went overkill. If I ran it on a timer I’m not sure how effective that would be. It takes a couple hours once I turn it on for the foam to breach... empty it like once every two weeks, pulle some pretty good skim..
