I could use some advice about adding a new clown to my tank. I currently have, what I believe to be a female true perc. She’s been with another smaller (presumably male) clown once before so I think it is pretty safe to assume she transitioned.

A friend has a small clown that was kept singly before. Is it safe to assume it is still a male? I don’t want to cause an issue for my 12 year old girl already in there but I’d like to add a second if I can.

What do you think?

If your clown is bigger than I would say you can try but since there both housed alone then there might be more aggression

Thanks. Jaws, my clown, has been flying solo for quite a while. She’s with other fish but not other clowns.

How long was the other fish single for?

Well she’s been a solo clown for a solid 7+ years

I think these mature closer to one year, and solo tend female if alone. The battered paired juvenile stays male or dies, until/ unless the dominant female dies and then I would expect the lone male to dominate the territory, and transition into female unless a bigger female was dropped in about the same time who kept him from changing. At 7 & 11 I would think you’ll have a cat fight between two females.

My clown is 12. This other clown is small, don’t know how old or how long it has been solo

Need to find out how long the lil guys been alone. It doesnt take long to transition.
