It’s Either Ich or Velvet

Hi All,

I’ve been debating for 2 weeks what is wrong in my DT. I’ve since set up a QT but have 2 ocellaris 1 royal gramma and a CBB who now all have small dots after flashing several days ago. I don’t think it’s possible to catch them all and have a Kole tang and tail spot blenny in the 29 QT so don’t even think it’s big enough. (Everyone QT your fish before starting this hobby! Lesson learned).

Question is - would velvet have killed everything by now if I’ve been noticing things for two weeks? If it’s ich, they are all eating well so I’m tempted to just “live with ich”. I am very skeptical to move the CBB to QT because he has just started eating very well and I think a transport like that would likely kill him. The pics show some spots but there are many more when looking at them under the light.

Velvet is typically a very quick killer and seem to produce more spots and fuzzy velvet appearance that that. Do the spots look like salt granules on the sides of the fish?

Velvet "can" kill quickly. With the CBB look at the fish at an angle. Look for the shimmer of the dusting like coating. Other symptoms: swimming into a powerhead, sensitivity to light, flashing/scraping, reduced appetite. . .

The spots on the tail of the CB does look like crypto to me. The markings on the clown are different, I'd be concerned about injury, bacterial infection, maybe uronema.

They do look like salt and only on the clear fins so far.

But no disappearing act? They have never lost an appetite but I’ve had some suspect dots the past two weeks but only showing up one at a time on any given fish.

It could be. Just finished treating prazi.

I suppose time will tell but it’s seeming like ich and I’ll be living with it. There is zero chance of getting the gramma, he has a cave and darts there whenever he sees the net.

Since the only resource I have is a 29g QT tank and already two fish in it, I think my plan is to just see what happens and hope for the best. I got into the hobby because of my love for the animals so I would be devastated that my mistakes caused any death, but lesson learned. If they all are still here in a month, I’ll introduce the QT fish and hope for the best.

Well the CBB is still eating but the spots are very present. I managed to get my clowns out and in to QT which I’m happy about because they are bonded. I used my red lights and got them pretty easily but the gramma and CBB are going to be tough... I’ll just have to do a lot of water changed and monitor aggression in a 29 for 72 days... decided fallow is the only way I can be confident in anything.

By the grace of GOD I just caught both the CBB and gramma with the red led method. Confused the hell out of them. All fish now in QT and the fallow begins. Any tips appreciated but I’ll be doing a lot of reading!
