Very cool tank (jar). I was reading about how people are installing heaters in the tank. This has me wondering how a external heating source would benefit these jars for cleaning up the look. My initial thought is that if you could lay one of these heater sheets underneath the jar and insulate it from burning your table and wire it to a temperature controller. However, the substrate may affect how this works creating a hotspot at the bottom due to lack of flow/mixing.

I wanted to put this idea out here to see if someone with more time than me could give it a shot since it seems many people viewing this are in the jar game.

I researched external heaters before, and maybe equipment has improved, but there were issues similar to what you are suggested. Because the ext heater heats the glass and not directly the water there is residual heat in the glass and whatever touches the glass so it takes longer to heat and then when water hits the correct temp the glass and everything else release that heat and make temp drift up. Likewise the direct heating of the glass or plastic tends to give cracks as it's not gradual heat.

That was the issue when I last checked but maybe it's better now?

Fed tank last night golden pearls and reef chilli and 100% WC. So far all the new corals look great. I do notice the burning banana has small sweepers and the Jason fox flame echinopora has decent size sweepers too. Was hoping to avoid sweepers but will just have to mind the placement.

Hi hart24601. I am part of the pico contest on N-R and I have the same container as you except 3 gallons instead of 2. I love the coral you chose and wow, the vibrant color you are getting. My coral are more run of the mill and mostly out of my seahorse tank. Also my jar is not heated so I don't know how growth will be.

Love this!

Oh awesome! I didn't know there was a 3g jar... I'm jealous!

What is the link to your build? How is the temp doing ?

Found it!

Going to look at it tonight. Glad you posted.
Hey, thanks for checking it out. The Target that I got my jar had 3 sizes, (I am guessing 1, 2, and 3 gallons). This being my first pico, I decided to go the biggest allowed for the contest.
The temperature seems fairly stable and I am guessing that its around 73-74°. It feels only slightly warmer than the seahorse tank which is a constant 71-72°.

i want my Christmas tree to look like this

when those top-shelfs grow in the wow effect w be amazing

my new lfs had some irresistible frags of zoanthids and a green acro, so I impulsed lol

then got some valonia, some bryopsis, was that not called already

:)

not worried. they'll be guided out im back to weekly work for a while. above is sharp!!

Still so jealous of the 3g!

Btw, just fantastic on the pump and chaeto and the tube worm case for air tubing, so cool!

Big feeding in progress. Whole lot of food this time, have the water ready to change in couple hours.

Awesome tank you have going. If I wasn’t picking up a 150g I’d throw the little money needed to get one of these going. Few questions, did you ever change your light and do you have a controller for the tank or just manually test the temp? If I did a tank like this idk if I could do it without a controller. Living in Colorado the temperatures fluctuate to much and even in the house swing pretty crazy.

Wow Brandon, I’ve seen your YouTube clips a year or so ago, you now want me to try a JAR again, got any pics of your jar as it is now mate????

I just kept the kessil a160, the smaller kessil has a shorter gooseneck and I like being able to mount this along side the jar if needed.

No controller but the neotherm seems to work great. I check temp with an inexpensive reptile fob that you point at the surface and it reads temp and a digital meat thermometer to verify sometimes!! Haha. It works.

FYI, when I feed my jar reef, I wait about 24 hours to do a WC. It lets the coral poop out the food. If you change immediately, they poop out in the clean water and it just stays there.

Good advise. I wonder what is in coral poo. With the crazy amount I fed was concerned with it breaking down and getting ammonia after 24hr, but that is something good to think about breakdown of uneaten food vs the poo.

When I feed my jar, (I feed it maybe once every two weeks) I only spot feed. Depending on what you're feeding, this might not be possible. But if I had to broadcast feed, I'd probably do the same thing. Feed, wait 24 hours, and then WC. If it's broadcast then maybe the corals will take it up as it floats around. Maybe some of the nitrates get used by the softies if you have some.

Oh man, I love this! I never knew you could have a reef like this, in such a small and isolated space.
I will have to give this a go when i'm craving a new project. Any advice on must read threads?

Cool. I will sure rememeber this going forward. Will have to just play around a bit. I don't think spot feeding would be much different than broadcast in this tiny volume but will just see as time goes on. No softies in here, just sps right now except for a tiny plate coral I just added.
