It amazes me that lights can be so expensive.

it's all about the quality of the parts used, where it was made.If you don't like the price, get the cheaper one. With the $10 million comment, now you are argueing just for the sake of argueing.Try putting a t12 and grow corals with it.It's still light up your tank and see what happen.Fwiw,i don't like smart ace.later

It is like that in everything in life. You will always pay more for the Newer tech, When the Iphone first came out it was 699, now you can get one for 49 dollars new. Why is there a 2 million dollar car when you can get a brand new honda fit for under 20k different luxuries and amenities? There is more economical lights that are fine for the hobby and then there are other ones with a bunch of bells and whistles for more money. Just like a Cadalac Escalade is the same as a GM truck, same fram and all just the bells and wistles adds 25k-75k more. Look at the Evolution light, when Cris first put them out they where 299 and non dimming, now that the Tech is more feasible for him and cheaper to install he has them at 299 or close to that a few years later.

Also you have to think, they need a large mark up. Do you think a company just doodles up a fixture? No they are paying some one in my guess a nice salary to design a fixture. That is most likely 50k to hundreds of thousands of dollars in R&D Wages and other cost and the facility that they house them in that needs to be covered in the price of the fixture. You would be surprised the cost of doing business, a 4k fixture might cost 500 to build then they sell it wholesale to a company for 1500 then that company marks it up 25% to the consumer, that means they make 1k off of every 4k fixture sold and they need to recoup all the wages they spent on, R&D and many other costs into that before the company sees a dime. I also assure you they are not making a killing off of fixtures.

I drive a honda. Thats Why I am so bent out of shape over lights. I can buy land for cheaper.

Lol...10,000,000 dollars really ticked someone off. I cant imagine what would happened if I went higher. Sense of humor people...Don't be afraid.

I am not angry about the money, just amazed. Like I said, I did my own lighting and it is great. I have acros growing just fine, along with my oysters. A canopy is not hard to make, and the cost of one is cheaper than (dare I?) 65 Trillion Pesos. Lights and Cars are not even close in comparison as far as parts.

A Kia is not even close to as durable as a BMW. Thus, a good reason for the huge price tag. New kia, 18grand. New BMW 50 grand. Not actually a huge difference in comparison to the exponential difference in light costs.

You can pay 200 bucks and get a great light...or you can pay 10x that (no exaggeration this time) and get a great light...with slightly more durable parts.

The part that I enjoy even more is when people get the most expensive light they can and put it in an in-wall or canopy. Basically they bought a Ferrari for the Headlights.

I posted the information on the LED thread. Anemonekeeper answer me:
«Both of those fixtures are about half of what you need. I would do a DIY cree fixture for both tanks.»

As it seems I didn't find the fixtures he was talking about. :squigglemouth:

I cant wait until they utilize plasma to light fishtanks, then they will cost a bagillion bucks.

One thing tht would at least help is if you could make a mini turbine (like what generates water in a dam) and help cut down on the utility bell.

Microchips were once small doritos...maybe the future holds micro turbines?

Place it by a powerhead and it can power your lights? Or even better, something inline with a return pump! Come on engineers. Get to work!

While you're at it make solar panels that charge off t5s. Its all possible..."we landed on the moon"-Lloyd Christmas

With all these great ideas why don't you try to figure them out? Not to be mean but you are complaining about things that aren't even similar. How long have they had to get the technology in cars to where they are, 100+ years right? Saltwater tanks have been popular for what, just over 25? Technolofy is advancing so fast these days that no company can keep up with it. By the time a company comes out with a new product, it's already outdated.

As with anything, once the technology matures it will come down in price. Look at the tech on cars. HID's are coming on lower end cars, as are LED tail lights and headlights.

If you'regoingto complain about how ecpensive it is, then come up with a way to do it cheaper. Everybody can complain, but can you come up with a solution to your complaint?

I would if I was electrically inclined. I can handle ecosystems, chemicals, and the ideas. Give me a musical instrument and I can play anything. Im an artist, not an engineer, I wish I had that side of my brain lol.

And saltwater has been around since the greeks. Cool fact. They used to keep Salt water Ponds for Giant eels that they fed bad slaves to. not a bad meal for an eel!

I just bought 7 55x 3w led panels from china with a built in lcd controller in each for 1500. Was able to custom layout the
Leds as well. That's still not as cheap as the technology should be but its a lot more reasonable then most US
made units. The prices will drop further overtime. I went led because I like the idea of simulating sunrise sunset, virtually zero heat,
and a lot lower elec bill.

There are plasma aquarium lights...

And Kia is more reliable than BMW. Spends less time in the shop. There, I said it. :)

I did not know that, look where I live. Just because the internet has everything doesnt mean i have seen it yet lol.

And every Kia I have ever seen sounded like a lawn mower haha.

Edit: This is not the for sale section nor have you met the minimum requirements to sell here.
