So at risk of being click-baity and overly dramatic, it's honestly not as extreme as the title sounds. A quick backstory, then onto the things you guys really care about.

I got bit by the bug long ago. I don't know the exact moment that spurred it, although, maybe I do. I remember visiting a friend from High School that I hadn't seen in years, and walking into his house with this gigantic saltwater tank. I had endless questions, and endless fascination with it. I was watching his fish, looking at coral and just in awe about what could be kept right next to a Lazyboy. I think I might have annoyed him with how interested I was in his fish and how little I was catching up with him! I left and bought books and started researching. I chuckle now, checking out the "other" reefing forum and see I signed up for an account about 8 years ago, but just lurked.

I bought a house 7+ years ago. There was a distinct place in the house that made perfect sense for a tank. I gave it a lot of thought and started planning and scheming. I wanted to make it work, but circumstances at the time held me back. I think back then I was paralyzed by overwhelming amount of information and the fear of "doing it wrong". It's something I've worked on fixing all my life, overcoming perfectionism. I'm far from perfect, but I hate half-assing things.

Fast forward to 3 weeks ago, freshly back from our wedding in Hawaii and snorkeling with tropical fish, I had to make this happen. Luckily I have the perfect lady by my side who's just as into fishys as I am. I browsed craigslist and facebook and stumbled on this.

It was a 2 year old Red Sea Max 500. The tank was needing moved by the weekend, and after a quick negotiation we locked it in. I debated if i was getting in way over my head with this and if i should start with something a lot smaller. It all happened so fast, but i knew with my personality that I'd just end up going big in the long run anyways. Might as well fire off with a bang.

OK so now we're in rush mode. We decided we needed to paint the room before the big heavy tank came home.

You can see the wall to the left of the stepladder is the designated location.

Tank in it's location.

So in the tank was just a few corals and life, including some xenia, kenya tree, GSP, an anemone and a tomato clown.

So once the tank was setup we had some changes we wanted to make. The original rockwork wasn't our style, and certainly wasn't enough. There was some really nice mature coraline encrusted rock that came with it. I decided to just put in some marco rock and let it mature overtime. The mixed colors i thought would look bad, but honestly it doesn't bother me too much. I keep reminding myself that everything in this hobby requires patience.

We took a trip to the LFS and picked out our first acquisition, this Euphylia. Also started planning out what kind of fish we want. We know having just one tomato doesn't really fit our stocking plan, so he's going to need to be rehomed.

When the rock came in, we laid out a quick aquascape on the floor. This was tough since the tank was already running full of water and the rock. Our new rock had to be put in and out of the tank until we found what we liked. This is what we came up with:

I also yanked out the Kenya tree and xenia and all the little sprouts around the tank. I knew they'd only continue to spread and now was the time to trim things down.
During these first few weeks i kept testing ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. I wanted to be sure that all the moving and stirring around of everything didn't cause another spike. Luckily I've had no issues and the tank has looked really healthy despite a little brown hair algae.

This last weekend we went back to the LFS and decided to replace our clown with 3 Lyretail Anthias.

Also brought home a few corals that my wife couldn't live without.

Also pictured in the left is the pipe organ that came with the tank, and some GSP that i fragged off the rock to keep in case we want to have some in the tank. It sure is pretty and I'm not totally opposed to having some in the tank for a while.

So one other thing to mention. The RSM500 comes with 3 AI hydra lights. The previous owner told me that one of the lights was dead. I tried all the troubleshooting i could, and got a hold of AI. I sent the unit in after nothing was working, and they'll be sending a replacement soon.

The tank looks great and thanks for sharing the pictures and write up with us

I also have the S650 so if you need any help just ask.

And welcome to R2R as well, it’s great to have you with us!

Great story! It was like, wait, wait, wait, GO! Tank is looking really nice and I like the additions you have made since adopting it.

Welcome to R2R!

YEAH BUDDY, welcome to the club :)

Thank you! Excited to be here.

Well this weekend brought some more changes.

One of my main gripes about the Red Sea cabinet is how dark it is underneath for both sump maintenance and for storage. So i hopped on amazon and ordered some LED light strips.

Much better.

We also hit up the LFS for a few new additions.
20 more Astraea snails
2 Clownfish

I dropped them pretty close to the anemone, and that evening the dark banded one was already rubbing himself and nesting in :) So cool to watch.

The standard ocellaris still hasn't eaten or shown much interest in hanging out with his tank mate. He's more adept to exploring still, but I'm hoping this evening he'll show signs of hunger.

Great to have you aboard.

Congrats on the marriage and to owning a really nice tank.

Your pics are terrific and all is beautiful. Thank you for sharing your story and pics.

Thank you on both accounts!

So this past weekend we dropped by two vendors and picked up some more corals.

We also went to our LFS and grabbed their year end special "mystery bag". This was so fun for us, opening the bag to find what random stuff they threw at us. We were really impressed:

Yellow Scroll
Flower Petal Monti
Pocillipora (looks like brocolli lol)
Ricordia
Lepto

Things have been going pretty well. I've been testing Alk/Ca every few days and making small adjustments. So far things are pretty stable, but there isn't much for consumption in the tank just yet.

Our larger Anemone has also decided to move around, and ended up bothering the Euphilia pictured above, so we had to relocate the coral. Hoping he finds a place and stays. He's quite big and can spread out his tentacles to sting quite a lot around him.

Can anyone identify this coral? It came with they system. I popped it off a rock and put it on a plug. It only just started to open up and do something.

Also took a few macro shots. Really love the coloring on the snails.
