As usual, tank is looking great
Thank you. I've been doing a weekly video and pics for some time. It's really neat to see the growth and progression.
 
But also I haven't been really treating the cube as anything but a holding tank from the downsize to the first move to this move.... Now it's time to actually start treating it like a reef again.
 
Gem tang and foxface are in acclimation box getting used to tank mates. Will keep them there until Saturday about 2 hrs before lights out. Then deploy the mirror and see how it goes.
Foxy is very unhappy.

#Cronies I'm at a loss for ideas with my tank. It has been having issues lately where the drains will be fine for days and days and then suddenly the overflow will just start draining all the way down and flushing like a toilet. It will do this for a while and then stop, seemingly work itself out for a few days and then start up again. some days it does this for just a little while, and others it does it for a day or more. It is causing issues with my salinity and my ATO.
Last night i thought it was correlating with when the furnace would kick on and off, my thought being maybe the power load was drawing power away from the tank and causing the DC pump to push less water into the display. L and I noticed that our phones would temp stop charging for a split second each time the furnace kicked on. It occurs mostly at night and late evening when the furnace is working the hardest to keep up with the lower outside temps. However this isn't the only time it does it. This happens nearly every time, but it could just be correlation not causation.

My other thoughts are:
-Pump needs cleaned, this hasn't been done in a while and will be done tonight. maybe it just isn't pushing as much water into the display as it used to.
-Double check to be sure something isn't clogging the drain, I've done this a few times and there never seems to be anything in it.
-Pump could be going out
-Air is building up in the return lines causing a difference in head pressure (I have noticed that the returns seem to purge air bubbles pretty frequently and hadn't noticed that before) I think this is because of the return from the carbon reactor so I may move that

Any other ideas anyone has?
 
Is it possible to put the return pump completely on a battery backup and then turn the furnace on? If you can do this long enough for a few furnace cycles, you might be able to eliminate the (possible) power drop as an issue.

I'm having issues with my ATO and when my pump chamber gets too low, I start seeing air from the return... Is it possible that this is the cause of the bubbles you're seeing? If the issue is the pump, then maybe your ATO can't quite keep up when it goes back to full power...

this could work. ill play with this idea.

the ATO is good. I am certain the bubbles are coming from the carbon reactor. The pump for the carbon reactor is between the baffles of my sump so it sucks in air bubbles. i need to move this to eliminate it as a possibility. It defiantly is causing air in my return lines.

Sorry no clue guessing the return pump needs cleaned or it's the fuel pump. Also per Tim take off the u tube in the overflow. I did that and it definately helped with the flushing issues I had.
 
This is why I'm scared of sumps and my brain feels content with AIOs.

Its just noisy, no chance of an overflow. redundant design allows for ease of mind ;)

I am thinking air is a component of the issue for sure. Creates additional head pressure in the return lines, less flow going into tank, causing overflow to be to efficient and drain the water out.
 
This is going to sound crazy, but I feel like I have more problems with this whenever we are experiencing a lot of barometric pressure changes. As soon as everything stabilizes this problem seems to go away. I'm not 100% sure if there's an actual correlation or not, just my brief observations
