So my first tank in 125 years has finally arrived. According to the paperwork it needs 3 weeks for the silicone to cure before I can fill it up. that gives me lots of time for planning, plumbing and spamming R2R with questions. She's a 90 gallon "long" with LIG on the front and sides. I'm guessing the large bulkhead is the drain and the small is the supply. I noticed that the supplied PVC with the outputs doesn't fit snug into the bulkhead. Any help on getting this water tight is appreciated. Ohh what it's like to be a noob again.

Thanks!

Nice tank! For the drains; one is your main drain, one is emergency drain. Return plumbing will be done over the back of the tank.

Wow you've been out of the hobby a long time! =)

Great tank! Following along!
Lol that is the first thing I thought also......was trying to figure it out in my head before I realized it was probably a typo :)

I was hoping to eliminate any exterior plumbing. Would it be wrong to use 1 supply and 1 return?
No, it’s just louder and more prone to flood if the single drain gets clogged by a snail or something.

As @Hemmdog said its risk to flooding. I would do the exterior returns if it was me.
I was hoping to eliminate any exterior plumbing. Would it be a good idea to drill a hole in the back right bottom of the tank for the return? Or drill a hole in the top right back(exterior)? Or don’t drill a hole and have it come over the top of the back of the tank? I’m a little lost here.

Thanks!

Set it up to be a "Herbie" drain (one main drain and one safety drain). Run the return over the top. You can either paint the pvc pipe or purchase colored pipe which doesn't look too bad. Are you going to paint the back?

Is that what the pipe with the 2 outlets is for? Over the top? Is over the top better than drilling a hole in the back? I would think a 90* into the tank would be better than a 180*. I was planning on painting the back black.

Thanks!

It is possible that the pvc pipe with the dual locline was designed to go into the overflow box into one of the bulkheads. By doing it that way you end up with a single drain to the sump which cannot or should not be full siphon. That is called a durso drain a better option is to use one of the holes for a main drain (largest of the two) and the other for a safety drain. That set up is called a herbie style and the main drain is under full siphon and is very quiet. There is a ton of info on this stuff. You can certainly drill the back up high for and put a return through the hole but bear in mind the hole must be larger than the bulkhead that goes through it and it also must be at least one hole distant from the edge of the glass. This sometimes makes the return too low in the tank to allow for a small drain when the pump is turned off. Not a problem if you have a lot of room in the sump to handle the water, if not you will have a flood. Didn't you get some instructions with the tank?

I was thinking it was meant to go into the smaller bulkhead but the fit is not tight at all. That doesn't sound like the correct or safest way to do it regardless. I did not receive any instructions with the tank less the directions on how long to let it cure before adding water. This is a bit of a joy kill for me. My perfect setup is not not as clean or perfect as I had hoped or paid for. What would you do if you were in my position? I was depending on their expertise to guide me, maybe they thought I knew more than I do. Thanks for the help!

Over the top can be done without being obtrusive but if you want to go with a durso one main drain set up just match the bulkheads with the proper size pvc pipe. They should fit tight once they are glued in place. You can try the durso drain and if you think it is too noisy or change you mind later just make it a herbie and run the return over the back. Really nothing to lose.

I called them yesterday and they said that their standard config is a durso drain and more holes can be done but it has to be requested. I think I might drill a hole in the bottom back right for the return and create a corner cover out of black acrylic/abs.
