On February 13, Richard told me that my yellow bellied hippo was acting funny. I told him that she always acted funny so it was nothing new and I didn't even check on her. The following day she was gone. I frantically searched for her - looking into the tank from the front and both ends, used a mirror to be able to see down into the overflows and finally searched all behind the tank for a fish chip. I continued to look for her in the overflows and to watch for remains every time I walked by the tank for the next few days. I was also dropping a few Hikari pellets in each overflow when I feed the other fish, just in case, and did that for about two weeks. Finally I accepted that she was gone but the tank wasn't nearly as interesting to me anymore, to the point that I quit feeding them and let Richard do it. I was past due for a water change and just wasn't in the mood to mess with it. Heck, I even thought about selling everything and breaking the tank down.
Today as I was cleaning the glass I saw movement at the top of the water in the right overflow. I would have never thought I would be so happy to see a fish. I immediately called Richard to let him know that Dori was alive and well! As I was talking to him I realized that had I done a water change she would have died.
Some days are just GOOD.
