I've got a medium sized toadstool leather coral, and nearby are some fast growing zoos (or more likely palys). They've spread quite a bit and appear to actually be growing on the stem of the toadstool coral itself.

Is this common? Any reason for concern?

Yep common. Could irritate the toadstool. I’d remove and place elsewhere in tank.
