Hello!

I have 2 PP or RW wavemakers that dont work, I am not sure what is wrong but they wont even spin no matter what mode I put it in. The controllers work perfectly fine so how can I get these pumps to work again or am I just **** out of luck?

I was thinking that the motor is dead and I could possibly buy just a new motor for cheaper then buying the whole thing again.

I assume you already disassembled and cleaned the wet sides right? If they're just dead you could try to find a wet side, I've seen them for sale separately before but now I'm only seeing TW's, not sure what that would be compatible with. You could contact an ebay seller and ask.

Or find one used, and you'll have an extra controller.

I would just get a different pump.
I bought 5 jebaos and about 6 months later 3 of them just stopped working. Sometimes you get lucky and get one that last.

I have a rw8 that burned out at the dc connector. Guess it got loose or corroded, then hot and melted.

Cleaning regularly will help ensure continued operation. I purchased three of them about a year and a half ago and the one that died on me was the one I never cleaned. The two I was good about cleaning are still working today. And I also prefer the Jebao pumps because they use ceramic shafts, no stainless that will eventually rust like the mp's.

/Also, for the price, I can't find any other option I like better. I would be willing to spend more, but I'm not sure it gets you much. I see people with rusting shafts or rusting magnets on MPs and I think for what you pay for an MP this should not be happening. Might consider Tunze but that Jeabo is a huge value for what you get. Do you have any recommendations on what would be better?

For the price, I could have purchased an MP40 for all of the PP8's and 16's I have replaced. In fact I have two MP40s that are probably 5 years old or more working very well still. I have yet to have a jebao run for more than a year.

I'll be looking at Tunze too once my current ones decide to go.

A mid priced option between jebao and the mp10. Current loop pumps. Quiet, easy to clean, easy to control, and responsive customer service. They have been in the aquatics business for almost 20 years and made in California not China.

For the price, functions and how much water they push the Jeboa pumps are hard to beat. I see plenty of issues with the MP pumps, LFS as 2 MP40s that are super loud for example. I have had my 2 PP-8s and a used Speed Wave 1400/rebrand Jedoa DC running on my tank since last June with no issues so far. I am happy with them and would buy again.

How good are you about cleaning them on a regular basis though? Seems like they can't take neglect. Or maybe I just got luckier than you did. But ya, I see people complaining about them failing a fair amount of the time so I am conflicted about buying more of them. But I can't bring myself to pay out for an MP when they rust like they do. And you can't even get a replacement shaft right? I think I heard you have to buy a whole new wet side. Do you know if Tunze uses ceramic or stainless shafts? I really love that Jebao uses ceramic shafts. Also, what model of Jebao did you get? I hear the older models were much worse and they've been coming out with new models like every year. Each getting better in small ways. I got the pumps of the PP series and I can't complain. Like I said, the one I had fail I know I was neglecting.

I've been eyeing those, I assumed they were made in China. Do you know if they use stainless or ceramic shafts? I'll have to search and see what replacement parts they offer.

Also, I could see spending more on a super legit return pump but for a wavemaker, it's not a huge deal if I'm down a wavemaker for a few days.

Every two months mine get a vinegar bath. I use the PP and RW as these are the only ones I can find to work with my jebao apex adapter.

Maybe mine die prematurely since I have them on a custom program who knows. I just had my longest surviving RW16 die and am replacing it with a PP8 that arrives today. Fingers crossed.

I will saw from a performance perspective I love jebao in how they move water and how much I can change direction (i.e. not perpendicular to the glass). Longevity is my concern.

Funny you mention the MPs rusting. I have been searching for a cause of some of my sps not doing well and found my ancient MP10 is rusting in the shaft. I need to look at my MP40s now. That would cost me about 210 to replace all three wet sides!

Just remember, flow is more important than lighting. You actually can lose lighting for a few days and be fine. Lose flow for a few days, you have a dead tank. [emoji3]

Very true.

OP - Jabeo's are treated like a throw away item. I know that won't earn me many friends but after using them for a couple years RW 4's and RW 8's they tend to break within about two years give or take. Could me algae, grim, or other build up. Could be smaller snails or such. Could just be that the motors seize. Hard to say but I've had one last two years and another 6 months with yet another somewhere in between. This is with once a month cleaning due to the fall off. If they are not clean they will slowly lose the ability to move water. Plain and simple.

Good little pumps but I put it right there with other disposable items due to cost.

I agree with most of these pumps but I just figured there was a way to buy just the powerhead like the second post mentioned so I will go that route instead of spending an extra $30-40 for each controller when I already have 2 that work perfectly fine.

If I can replace them every year for $30-60 depending how much water I want to move, I would have to buy a new one for 7 straight years to equal one MP40.

Plus all the bad things I have heard about the MP models rusting, honestly seems like every one does. Being heavy SPS dominant, that really bothers me

Some will last longer - you may be surprised. They worked well in my 40 breeder. I connected them to my Reef Angel controller and I have to say with the custom libraries I could run all flow patterns similar to larger manufactures to include nutrient transport. Something say a Maxspect Gyre doesn't do. Just putting that out there. While it may seem I was bashing them I am not. I just treat them has disposable. Keep the cages if they are in good condition but other than that clean monthly and the flow is good.

Well ya, to a point. My point was that loosing one pump for a few days is no big deal. Obviously if all your wavemakers AND your return were all shut off that would be a huge concern.

Ya that's no good. The rusty shafts wouldn't be such a big deal for me if you could by just the shaft for a few bucks and swap it out. Like the Aqua Clear HOBs I use for QT or MJ pumps. You can replace the wear components cheaply.. Why is the "premium" brand not able to do this? Greed is the only reason I know.
