So I just got a new digital thermometer for my tank because my old glass one was reading 85 degrees all the time and that couldn't be right...well after putting the new thermometer in the tank I found out it was right and my tank is like a hot tub...my question is what is the best way to get the temperature down to 78 where it belongs without shocking the tank...Right now I just turned off my heater and I'm going to let the tank go down naturally is this a good idea?

slow and steady. i wouldn't decrease it more than .5* / day if they have been accustomed to that temp. if they've been that way for some time i might do it even slower...like .5* every few days.

Slow and steady wins the race huh...that sounds like a good idea to me, thanks man.
