Japanese Coral Clarification

Just like I told Rev my Corals are legal but I am not :shhh:

i find it interesting that 3 people who have never really contributed to R2R but signed up a long time ago find it compelling to put their 2 cents into this thread all of a sudden...lol

so anyone want to take a guess as to what other forum has a link to this thread?

I don't need to contribute to this site to comment on what's going on do I???? I frequent the site every now and then. But I'm being honest about what I said. Who really cares?

Some of us care about what goes in our tank...and obviously some of "us" don't. I guess all of our reasoning for getting into this hobby isn't the same!

Yes everyone is welcome to their opinions both pro and con about the subject at hand as long as it's civil, and everyone is good so far. Let's just not get personal and we can have a great discussion.

I think for a bit Japan opened up some trade when building an airport and clearing a coral reef. Although it was a shame they destroyed a reef they did try to find a use for the animals. There probably is a little bit of illegal trade going on but it is not like they are selling them on the corners.
Are the corals better off in the ocean? Sure they are. Then again, I have yet to have a bleaching event or a crown of thorns eating my 4 feet of ocean.

Wow.....temper temper..
So here is a question. Is it ok for Japan to get Japaneese corals? If so. If you traveled to Japan and bought it at a LFS (in Japan) could you legally bring it over to the states? Like with you on the plane? Not sure how the whole customs things work other than you probably can't for CDC and other gov protection agency reasons. Just adding to the discussion...

It's legally sold at most Japanese LFS but there's a Strict BAN on exportation of their much Hyped Micromussa's or any other Japanese Corals as well!!!

I think most people (end buyers) are ignorant to the fact that these corals are illegal to harvest if truly being harvested off Japanese waters. Many articles and threads I have read point to the "HYPE" factor for selling these corals for more money and just using the name "Japanese". According to Fish and Wildlife they are aware of the importation of these corals and have been cracking down for quite sometime. They too acknowledge in most instances the person selling these corals are misleading the customer into thinking the coral are from Japan when it actually is not.

My point is why rob a bank and then walk around with a flourescent orange shirt saying "Im the bank robber"? Surely the wholesalers that advertise these corals as Japanese, must know if they are illegal then they are doing something wrong. When I have seen them being offered for sell I dont see an inflated price on them. I see the same prices accross the board as say Austrailian corals. Just my 2 cents!!!!!

I thought it was not illegal for the collection of corals in japan. I thought it was just a ban on importing them to the U.S.? I thought there was a ban because the Japaneese really **** the reef/ocean. I could be wrong it has been a while since I looked up the laws on importing corals from Japan.. Example: they would kill everyshark in the sea just for the fins for shark fin soup? almost everytime a boat is busted for illegal fishing or whaling it is a japanese boat.

if you "care" so much about the hobby why dont u go get some buckets put all ur fish and corals in them take a walk to the beach and dump them where they TRULY belong. how about that? whoever it was selling the "japanese" micro maybe didnt know or he did. do u think im really gonna look online to see if a bangaii cardinal is "legal" to have??? heck no if the coral looks good and i have the cheddar to buy it i will. meanwhile those who claim that "some of us care" buys diamonds for their wife or have a fur coat. Blood Diamond good movie maybe you should watch it. i dont kno if ur a male or female but im sure you never checked to see where the last diamond you bought came from.

Is There a TaiwanesE Coral OuT thERe? I am TiRed of thiS JaP Sh..T....

i think that it should be legal for tank raised corals to be exported... i mean... why not? not hurting the ocean at all

I honestly think that tank-raised is the way to go. I do not like seeing the reefs and such being destroyed, and I encourage the buying of aquacultured corals. All of mine in my tank were advertised as ORA or I got as a frag from a friend. I think the aquaculturing of corals and breeding of fish is the future of the hobby.

I think the whole Australian/Japanese craze could very much so being dealers bluffing as well. The Great Barrier Reef is obviously known for the color and vibrancy that it has, so I think if a vendor gets some type of coral that has great color, they may be able to slap Australian on there or something of that nature and get more money from it. I dont encourage this, but I think that if they have a nice micromussa and put Japanese on it, it could fetch a higher price.

Could just be an economical strategy, yet I do not know enough about importing and collecting to comment on true collection from Japanese waters, and if it is or isnt legal.
