Japanese Zoanthids?

Don't think temp has anything to do with it. My chiller does not start until tank hits 81F and during the day runs quite a bit here and none of the different ones I have nor the ones from for the grow out here on the forum are troubled. I would try doing iodine dip if they are not looking too good. Place them in straight Kent's Iodine/iodide for a minute then shake off excess and back in tank with good flow.
If yo are getting fungus on some spots def cut off the parts a few polyps away and toss any with fungus.

One more thing, becareful do not let them lose their colors.

Once they lose their colors, it is very difficult to bring the colors back.

Parishilton,

How do you get them to not lose their colors? Just by placing them in shaded areas or what?

^^^^Good question.^^^^

I prayed for them this morning before I left work...

Man! you put the hex on mine! i was saying it was so far so good.... now the last 2 days it looks like it has pox... white dots on it, not opening! aargh  gonna go try a peroxide dip.:squigglemouth:

These are mine. I have had them for months now.

Actually I do not really know where they are from. But in Thailand, they are told as zoas from Tonga. And I also do not know whether they are deep water zoas or not but mine in the last picture is only 2 inches from the water surface. I put them here since the first day I got them.

honestly, every time I see pics of your tank i am GREEN with envy! Sorry to hijack here, but i hope someday my reef can look a tenth like yours!

As I have experienced, if they are not open for some time and once they start opening again, their color are not as bright as when I forst got them.

And once my chiller was broken and the temp got high for a couple of days. That was when they start losing their color and I have never gotten their color back as the way they were before again.

I've been watching this whole Japanese zoanthid thing with some curiosity for awhile now. I've seen plenty of fads where corals get marked beyond what is sane, but this is one fad that I've found pretty humorous. I will admit that some of the "japanese" zoos are pretty and rare, like the flaming mean greens, green skirt mean greens, safecracker lookalikes, orange eagle eyes, etc.

But for people to be paying $5-10 per polyp on zoos that look exactly like eagle eyes, kedds redds, orange delight, etc just because they're "Japanese" takes the cake. I'm more surprised that people haven't reinvented the Safecracker fad since those used to be HUGE and there's definitely some coming in that look just like the old safecrackers.

Some people mght argue that there is a big difference, but I've purchased plenty of Eagle Eye colonies that will have 3-4 morphs of the same zoo on one rock. Some are brighter/more intense and some aren't. It is very common with a large shipment of zoos to see variations on the same zoo.
I got an order in April that had Kedds Redds, Zombie Eyes, Kedds Redds with gold centers, Kedds Redds with orange centers, and Cherry Bomb zoos. They could arguably all be called the same zoo, just with different color variations.

I figured the market was going to quickly become saturated and the prices are dropping quite nicely.

I have had mine about a month. They are about 18-20" from a 150W 14K MH. They are in med flow and the tank stays about 79-80. They are doing great. They have pop out about 3 babies so far. They are tight to each other with short stems. Plus their mat looks like it is good shape not holes. Mine seem fine.

While a couple of the varieties look similar to eagle eyes, the orange with yellow rings (I think people are calling them flaming hornets) and the yellow with yellow rings are unique to this bunch of zoas.

It seems like many of the brighter, yet common zoas and palys (bam bams, eagle eyes, etc.) often are in the $5 per polyp price range. It also helps to buy bigger pieces because the price per polyp is usually much less. I've bought the japanese varieties for less than $1 polyp on pieces containing more than 100 polyps.

Any updates on how the DW zoanthids are living? Also how is the price on them now? Thanks guys.

Since first seeing this, I fraged up a few deepwaters and placed them all over the reef, 4 different "jap dws", in water that ranges from 72 to 80 degrees every day, from shaded to top of the reef,

ALL are doing fine, IMO the issues experienced not only with these species but all most or all zoas or palys are individual to the reefer, there are some consistancies but I have yet to have any issues with light or water temp, the most signifigant issue I have seen is making sure there is enough flow, IME low flow leads to collection of detridus and other particulate, I am sure is not super healthy for the immune system of the coral.

I have not lost a single colony/frag.

After talking to a few importers and transhippers, I have been told more than once that the Japan moniker is promoting an inaccurate impression, mainly for marketing hype. These zoas are coming from places like Java or Kupang. The transhipper I talked to today said he has been getting these zoas for some time in his shipments, but they were coming from Java, not Japan.

Now this is something I believe.

I have 7 different small colonies to medium sized colonies and none have shown any problem in my 78 degree tank with a 250 watt mh light.
One really pricey piece faded pretty bad on me and one small frag given to me by a friend is showing some stress. ( probally from being fragged just a day or so after being shipped).
The only thing I'm not seeing is alot of growth rate, compared to others I have.

i have kept mine for about 9 month now and all have been growing very fast compare to all the other zoa i have farm in the past.
