Jason Fox Punk Rock Favia

I got a Punk Rock Favia Frag From the JF anv. sale he had a few weeks ago. The other frags I Got are doing great. Got a few Acro, and 2 other type of Favia. I messaged with Jason and he said that particular one needs low light, so I have moved it all the way to the bottom of my tank and even tried where it was partially shade. It hasnt opened up and wanted to see if anyone else has had any exp with this coral.

Hard to believe people still trade in terms like "low light". You were set up to fail IMO.

Can you ask him what on earth does "low" mean since it's a relative term? 1000 lux? 10,000 lux? 30,000 lux?

It's 2016 not 1996, why aren't they telling you the lux (or PAR) the frag was growing under?

Lux meters are free and everyone has access to them and a $400 PAR meter is paid for by selling one silly-price frag – so what's the excuse?

I do not have this particular favia, but I have kept many of them with success. Do you have any pictures? Is it deflated looking or just not showing polyps or both? Is any skeleton showing? In my experience, too much light makes a favia bleach. This issue may not be light related.

Have you tried target feeding it. Favias and most other LPS do better when there is food available for them. It can take weeks or months for some corals to acclimate. I would recommend leaving it in one spot lower in the tank for a few weeks and feeding it a few times per week.

Failing to see how this is helpful being our tanks are full of water, and my phone and the linked to meter are not waterproof.

you take measurements at surface level. It will most likely vary what reading you get at different places on the surface of your tank. Fow example T5s will get the highest reading in the middle of the top of the tank and lower readings on the outer edges. LEDs will get a higher reading directly under the light. this is helpful in choosing coral placement. Corals like LPS and softies would go closer to the outer edges of the tank if you had T5s and so on. No, it's not a PAR meter, but it's not $300 either. It at least gives you a numerical read out that will assist you in coral placement instead of simply guessing.

Can you post a photo? Might just be settling in. Shipping could be a real pain sometimes

I have it on the bottom in the sand and have tried target feeding a number of times. Polyps never extend. I have a few as well, I bought a Tasmanian devil frag from JF earlier in the year and it is aleady doubled in size. I will leave on the bottom and see from there.
