Hello all this is my first post on R2R and I had to share these. I was busting some rock up and this was on the inside (facing inside) of a branching type rock thought it was pretty cool so I snapped some pics to share and see what you all think?

That is friggin awesome man!!! Very nice find, wonder what kind of creature/fish it came from?

How big is it aprox?

Very nice find!

Forward that picture to the paleontology department of a near by university and I bet the could identify it for you.

And if they do please let us know.

That is way cool. I also would send pics to a university in hopes of a identification never know might be something new or rare

I will qualify this by saying that I am not fossil guy but do have a degree in Geology. I'm just gonna through it out there but my guess is that is not a fossilized jaw. I think that would be beyond rare to have a set of jaws so well preserved with no other skeletal fossils in association. It does look cool though, just my 2 cents. Are there any other fossils on this rock?

I would lean towards a jaw fossil its to much of a coincidence that both the upper and lower pieces are exactly the same shape and size and if you were to close it the teeth would interlock perfectly. Just because theres no body doesnt mean anything maybe the rest got eaten and that floated to the bottom who knows but its a stunning find

Here's a thought.

Modern and ancient sharks only have cartilage skeletons except for their jaws. Hmmm....

Proof of the megaladon has only been proven by their jaws.
