I’m sure this has been done before, but when I searched I kept finding the sand tray thing for QT, and a lot of posts that you should just go straight to DT because of how poorly they tend to do in QT, which is what I experienced. I tried the sand tray. placed him in it repeatedly. He’d be buried under the live rock each morning terrified (I know, I run QT with it unless I need to treat with copper, then remove), smashed between it and the glass, refusing to move. This went on for two weeks. Eventually his gill plate got ripped or bit off (can see in pic, albeit blurry), and I thought he’d die if I didn’t come up with something. Behold, the critter keeper. He seems to love

it. For a larger QT tank I think it’s a much better option.

I have one on QT right now. I put a small container of silica sand (not supposeed to absorb copper) in there, he's never touched it. He hangs out in the PVC pieces and in the corners of the tank. I administered two rounds prazi, and now for 5 days in therapeutic Copperpower at 2.0 ramped up over 6 days.

He eats well and is doing just fine and has never bothered with the container of sand. I've alternated table shrimp and live blackworms for feeding. He gets a little bored with one food and then I switch to the other and he loves the switch. The Yellowhead Jaw seems pretty hardy to me so far

Does he seem stressed in the tank corners? I have quite a few other things in QT which likely made mine have more stress without a sand bed it would use. I agree they are fairly hardy, mine took a fair amount of physical damage and seems to be dealing fine.

That said, mine is finally displaying its natural behaviors in the critter keeper. It has multiple burrows, and is hovering completely exposed. I have to think it’s less stressed then it would be otherwise, which should increase the odds of success.

No apparent stress in the corners, he doesn't seem to mind at all. He is by himself in QT. I just fed him a few minutes ago, he comes right up to turkey baster and grabs shrimp pieces right out of the end of it. He eyeballs the pieces as they slowly go down the tube and then pounces...LOL. He's tiny, maybe 1.5-2 inches

I think being the only fish is key to them not being totally spastic in QT. That’s probably partially why mine is dramatically improving, I’ve sort of created a decently sized area where it is alone. Mine is tiny too. Really fascinating creatures. Hoping he can adapt to a moderately busy DT eventually.
