I have a jbj 28 i have aquaa hob skimmer and a phosban do i realy need to use the intank media basket that came with the tank?

You do not HAVE to use it

I took the basket out, and put chaeto in the back compartment. I added a custom lightbox to grow the chaeto.
Worked very well for me when I had my JBJ 28g!

Can i do it without the chaeto to?

I used mine to put sponge in the top and charcoal below but that is totally up to you. Nope you do not need chaeto either.

I have the JBJ 30 gallon with the Aqua max hob and use filter floss in my basket and purigen. Also have an hob refugiem with rubble rock, chaeto to grow pods for my mandarin.

Nope, you definitely do not. It's one of those no need items. I used on for about the 1st year.
