Hi All,

I received my Icecap Gyre 3K yesterday and it looks like it may be too much for my JBJ. I have fine sand and it’s been a dust storm running at just 10%-20%. 10% is not an option although it alternates between 10% and 20% in random mode, which is what I’ve been using. If I’m correct this is still only like 300-600gph. I’ve tried it on the back wall horizontally and the back corner vertically (which I thought would be perfect with the curved glass front). The only thing I haven’t tried is the left/top horizontally but I’m not crazy about that look in such a small tank with nothing else going on atm (it’s not even two months old).

Thoughts? I love the pump but I’ve had it off now for 5 hours and the tank still hasn’t calmed down. Would something like an MP10 be better? I looked at the Maxspect Gyre 230’s but I can’t understand the price difference over the icecap. (I don’t need to run two and the icecap controller seems great to me.)

Thanks in advance,

Adam

Yeah, a 3K would be too much. Like you have figured out, you can turn them down but a benefit of having a variable speed pump is being able to use more than the 10-20% range. You could go with a 1K gyre or depending on what you're looking to keep for corals, one or two MP10s. Ecotech suggests one for LPS, two for SPS.

Bummer. I thought about a 1k but it seemed like the general consensus was that gyres were loud when run near max capacity. I really, really like the gyre concept so I may consider giving the 1k a shot. I’ve been out of the hobby for a few years but I was thinking that even at 20% (600gph) I was between 15-20 times turnover per hour. I did have an MP10 before and loved it though.

I have an XF230 and an MP10 on my 36-inch 40 gallon. Yes, at times of the day when everything else is silent in the house, I can hear the two variable speed pumps changing speed. But that's just the sounds of my tank running and I don't mind it.

I have the same tank had to down grade from 2 MP40’s (overkill) to 2 MP10’s and that’s just perfect, I’m running them at 30%. Hope this helps with you moving forward.

Thanks all! So I’m reading about the Neptune WAVs (not for my tank, I was just bored) and I think I found where my logic was flawed. I was thinking of pump power as a straight line starting at 0. Making 10% of the 3k 300gph and 20% 600gph. Looks like even on 10% the WAV is 1,800gph vs it’s max 4,000gph. I know they’re not the same pumps by any stretch but the means I may be closer to 1,000-1500gph at 10%/20%, more than triple what I expected. Knowing that I may give the 1k a shot. I did love my old Mp10 but the pricing on the quiet drives is brutal.

Sort of high jacking my own thread but hopefully someone can help. I keep going back to an MP10 (I know, I was pro Icecap 1k like 2 mins ago) if I can find a used one for a reasonable price. I’m assuming not much has changed since they switched to quiet drive but is there a way to get a general idea of age for the used units with the white drivers (ES). I noticed some have black stickers on the dry sides while others are white/silver - does this help narrow down a production year similar to black/orange label Apex units?
