Instruction says 1 foot clear in the back and front for proper ventilation.

I have 5 inches away from the wall and infinite space in front.

Am I good with that in the back? Just making sure others have done similar and all is okay.

I would have to redo the hoses to be longer if all say hi need 12 inches, I foot from the wall.

I have unions if I have to do longer hoses to gain the extra 7 inches the manual says.

I ran a large chiller(think 1/3hp) years ago when pumps and lighting gave more heat than anything else. It was in an open back stand probably 3 inches from stand door and maybe 18 inches to back wall and had no issues.

Having said thay though it may have been vented completely different, etc. What worked for me may be different for whatever you are using

I ran 1/4 inch on 90 gallon bowfront and that wasn't 12 inches from the back, but clear from anything in front. I had no issues ever, my metal halides caused more heat.

But I am opposite of what you lay out for yours 17 inches in back clearance, so I wonder?
