Anyone running these external and what are your thoughts? It says in the instructions to only run them submerged but I think it just means not to run them dry.
Also, are these regular standard pipe thread?

I just got mine and thought I read wet or dry use. Haven't checked the thread type yet but would be nice to find a union that fit it

Water can apply a much greater cooling effect than air, so it'd be worth calling the manufacturer or otherwise double-checking. (I have seen others mount them externally, but that doesn't necessarily say anything.)

Heat and leaking were the two things I am worried about. I am pretty sure I read on their website you can use them externally but as everyone knows it is kinda hard to read.

If they speak English maybe call them? That's what I'd do if it was any other brand...

I asked the very same question in the Jebao group buy and in a thread of my own. I am still waiting on my pumps so I don't have the instructions in hand. Someone had asked Jebao and was told they saw no problem running externally. I would still love to hear from someone who was in fact using one this way. I am far more concerned with leaking than heat as every thing I have heard is they run very cool.

How cool they run (marketing speak for "how hot they run") is a direct function of how much power they use.

The question is how are they designed to be cooled?

If they are run externally, air and the infinitesimal amount of water circulating through the impeller well are all there is for cooling.

If run submerged, then there's water inside and out to assist with cooling,

In general, water is much better at cooling than air.

Could be fine either way, but at the price these things clearly aren't built like a Mack truck...so I can understand being hesitant to risk it.

Too bad you can't call the company and ask...

Cheap comes with a price of its own. :)

The how cool they run it was from reading reports from those using them saying the were seeing lower tank temps after changing out to them not verbiage from Jebao.
I 100% agree with you on the water cooling better than air. There are many pumps that work both ways Quite One, Eheim, Mag drive ect..
The person who posted in the group buy had talked to the factory and they said it should be no problem.
My main concern is the likelihood of metric threads not working with US spec PVC and leaking or breaking.
I will decide how to proceed one I have mine in hand, heck I always wanted to be a lab rat. LOL
As for the build quality I have not had one in my hands yet to know. From what I can tell from pic's no different than some red and black ones that sell for 2 times the price. I would bet a shiny new penny made side by side in the same Chinese factory only difference plastic color.
Unfortunately most all of the gear we get comes from China but it is nice to skip the middle man sometimes.

Will be interesting to hear about it once you get started with one! :)

FWIW, FlexPVC.com carries metric to standard PVC adapters if you end up needing one.

PVC-Metric-Adapters

FWIW, Mag pumps are still made in the USA. Quiet One and a few others are made in Italy. The rest are mostly from China...a few exceptions form Korea, etc. For now at least there are still options.

Thanks for the link to the metric adapters. I'm very excited to it get going too. I haven't had a reef tank in a long time, but i'm taking my time to get it right. I hope LOL.
