Jebao has a UV Sterilizer? WOW

So I am in the market for a UV sterilizer to add to my system and a buddy said "I think Jebao makes them. Check it out". So I looked and came across this.

Amazon- 55-watt Jabeo UV

Now here is the thing... I know their dc pumps are in a lot of peoples tanks. Think this will be the next thing? I really can not find any info out there on this. (besides reviews, they mostly seem like pond people) Has anyone had any first hand experience with these?

I mean I was looking at a AquaUV and I won't lie was sticker shocked. Really though it is a light bulb in a PVC tube with some fittings. So why pay 3 times the amount! This.... man, I might order one tonight!

I have one on my 210 fowlr, I run it with a cobalt 1200. I got it when I had a bacterial bloom, cleared it overnight. I keep it running as a tank clarifier, I believe that really is all it is. I've had flukes and ick while it's been running so I hope you're not thinking it's going to do more than just keep the water crystal clear and help with algae.

I just had an issue of some sort so I was thinking it might help prevent things in the future. I mean for the price... Why not right? It's way better than spending by the money on a AquaUV.

You have it running for 2 years now. Have you ever took it apart to see if it leaches the black plastic?

I had a Jebao sterilizer a little over 10 years ago and unless they have changed I would highly suggest no one buy one. The plastic at the bottom of the quartz tube melted on mine and water got to the bulb and busted it. After water got to the bulb a tracer in the power supply burned up and smoked. I know everyone likes their pumps but this one experience has scared me away from buying another Jebao product.

I spend entirely too much money on my tanks to trust any jebao made piece of equipment on it.

I have had a couple for years. You are correct, a UV unit is a plastic tube with a lightbulb in it. What is there to screw up? Answer...nothing. I run one on my 300 gallon and one on my 240 cichlid tank. I have a pond in the front yard that was getting green water. I plumbed it into the return pump on the pond and BAM! two days later chyrstal cleear.
The bonus is that you can get replacement bulbs for like $20 on ebay. I got 2 for $30.

Just for the record, I have had jebao pumps outlast expensive vectra pumps... same flow volume. Some of their stuff is crap, but others are actually very dependable. They are kind of like harbor freight that way. I wouldn't but a miter saw from harbor freight but their wood clamps are an amazing value.

No issues with the plastic when using it on a saltwater tank?

I have seen several of the main brand Aqua ones used in my area. I bought one for $75. I had bought a jaebo UV off amazon but I am not sure it was even made of PVC... it looked like plastic. I sent it back and got the used one I have now and it works great. I would suggest shopping around for used, just check the quartz sleeve and make sure it is not broken or cracked, replace the bulb and you are good to go!

I have jaebo pumps and have no problems with some of their products, the UV one just seemed to fall short of even their expectations. It would not surprise me that the plastic may cause issues eventually. Jaebo should use pvc instead, its not like pvc is expensive?

I have not had issues but there is a sticky thread where the UV light is eating the plastic.. when the open it there is a bunch of plastic "dust" inside them. I have not witnessed this. There is a sticky about it. I don't know if this dust is toxic...PVC is totally inert (obviously) and I have not experienced any issues.

Dont think i would chance it. UV lighting needs to be very specific wavelengths. Cheap bulbs usually dont guarentee success.

I've read reports of the Jeboa uv units leaching plastic. This is caused by the uv light degrading the plastic on the inside. Has anyone who uses these taken theirs apart after a year of operation? How about 2 years of operation? How does it look o f you have? Curious if anyone has seen this in their units.

Yes these leak plastic and will eventually bust when the light degrades the plastic enough. The bulbs are also cheap and although they are 55 watt, they are most likely just sucking power and not producing that high of UV energy. This can be used to clarify but not sterilize.

I am a jebao fan for the most part but the UV sterilizers do leech black stuff. I posted a pic in my build thread.

When I talked to a distributor, they said that no where in the specs does it say it's saltwater safe.

I am going to use it on my pond in the spring.

You can definitely screw up a plastic tube and a light bulb, mine was proof of that.

I think it depends on your application, 1st off the ones available to us are only good for algae control and bacterial blooms. Which mostly is a temporary situation, or should be, so using one to clear a bloom should be no problem. if you think you are controlling parasites or the like and are running it full time, you are living in denial. The output power and application needed to do this is way beyond what you are buying. If you need it to control algae full time, you are doing something wrong. So running one of these to quickly clear a tank is really the only use for it, so why spend a ton of money.
