Jebao, is it really "bad?"

So, I have been looking around and am considering to start dosing sometime this year. I found these Jebaos on Amazon and after a little research, some people say they've had them for years and never had a problem and others say they're garbage. Does anyone here use them or have experience with them?



Appreciate any advice.

I can’t see your amazon link, but Jebao power-heads and pumps are great. Plenty of people use their pumps for years with no issues.

Nowadays, several companies that claim to be premium (and charge like it) only offer a 1 year warranty. Yup. $350-450 return pumps with a 1 year warranty.

So unless you are going for a REAL premium brand like Sicce (5 year), Tunze, or abyzz (10 year), Jebao is a great option to save money. I have several of their standard and cross-flow powerheads that have worked for years, and return pumps for even longer than that.

When my MP40 ($370) dry side starting vibrating after 18 months and wouldn’t stay on, I had to pay $240 for a replacement dry side. Their customer service is fantastic during warranty period (and even sometimes when you are slightly out of it), but if companies were more confident in their products, it would be longer.

I had one dosing magnesium and it dosed an entire gallon gallon when it was only programmed to dose 20 ml. The problem is that I'd does not maintain a pinch point on the line and it will create a siphon. The siphoning effect will happen in both directions. The dosed liquid will all run back to the container if you try to eliminate the siphoning into your tank. Then when the doser kicks in it needs to run the liquid through an empty line until the liquid reaches the desired location. When this happens accuracy is lost.

I went to pick up a clownfish from a breeder about a month ago and he had his jebao dose a gallon of Alkalinity into his reef system. It killed many of his corals.

In general I am a fan of jebaos wave pumps. Since I liked the pumps so much I thought I would try the doser. The doser is not worth the money.

If you do purchase one just be careful. Don't put the dosing line all the way to the bottom of your container until you gain trust in it.

I heard the old dosing units work really well, but the new ones not so much. you may want to check out reefbreeders u may spend a few more dollars, but at least if something goes wrong it will get replaced.

that up to you, if you want to spend little extra cash for better quality and has better feature then yes. I am currently using one right now i see no problem. i had it over a little over a year now.

None if you consider that the motor is external on a MP40. But several of their models have comparable flow and lifespan at 1:4 the price, absolutely. I have two MP60wQDs as well as that MP40, and plan on transitioning to a different brand as they expire.

I've got a doser of theirs that's been running around 4 years at this point, no complaints.

Not part of your initial question but I'll put it here anyway, I've got 4 of their flow pumps. 2 are around 6 years old and the other 2 are around 3 years old. No complaints from me thus far.

Yea I understand. Which model though specifically has the wide and powerful flow like a mp40? I’m interested in trying it out. I have two of the smaller jebaos on my smaller tank(40b) and they are pretty good, not as good as an mp10, but maybe I got the wrong model. I think mine are SOW’s.

So far in my experience I'm 0 for 2 on Jebao return pumps. The variance in people's experience comes down to quality control - the pumps are cheaper because there seems to be no QC done - some are great, some aren't. By not pulling the bad ones they can afford to sell cheaper. You may get lucky - I didn't.

Always have to remember, that complaints will out number satisfied comments by a good percentage. An unhappy customer is very likely to leave a negative review while maybe 1 in 10 satisfied customers leave positive reviews. So as long as I see more positives, I typically discount negatives unless they're written with some justifications.

Getting feedback on here is more valuable, but again. You're still more likely to get a response on negative experiences because...people.

I have not had anything Jebao fail unless it was dropped or just plain abused and even then they kept working most times.

I have a dcp 12000 on a 1000 gallon pond and the controller is under a rock. Been running almost 24/7 for 4 years now. Only shut down is when the pond freezes.

I swear by their products and will carry them in my store.

Oh! My son reminded me that it won't be 4 years until July... on this pond. We ran it for 6 months on the previous 500 gallon pond and it was too strong for the spillway and kept making a mess so we put in a smaller pump.

I have noticed that the Jaebo have doubled in price over the last year or so. This makes them not so much of a money saver as they once were.
I switched to a Sicce for that reason. A Sicce adv. 9.0 for $250 or a Jaebo DCQ8000 for $110-$130? Both are rated about the same but being AC the Sicce will push past restrictions better I hope. And the Sicce only uses about 25% more power.

I bought 2 PP-8s one still works. I upsized the tank and it is not used now.
PP-15 still works. This is used for flow in the sump.
2 SOW-20 one still works. I replaced the one that died with a MP-40. The rubber mounts are very poor and separate easily.
2 DCT-8000 pumps both work

The pumps seem to be higher quality in the hand than the wave makers.

A dosing pump is not something I would cheap out on (I have plenty of jebao products). BRS dosing pumps are economical and can be put on simple timers. That being said if you are dead set on using this jeabo dosing pump I would put it on a timer as well. That way it can't get stuck on.

I've had a jebao DP-4 that you link to for about 3 years now. It works fine. I have read that they made a change to the heads along the way which caused some siphon issues. I'd bet they fixed it by now.

If you're uncertain, you could just bench test it for a few days with some large empty pop bottles. Have it pump water from one set of bottles to the other set in, say, 50ml steps 4 times a day for a few days. If it's calibrated and working, all the full bottles should end up empty at the same time.
