Jebao UV light leaching plastic

Hello Reefers!

It’s official they leach plastic .....

I read an article about these UV’s leaching plastic and I thought maybe it was wrong I finally cleaned my UV light and black stuff is pouring out after I scrub the sides I continue to get black stuff which is plastic .

I no longer have it hooked up nor will I use any of their products as their pumps have failed me in the past .

This is the first I've heard of this issue, but Jeboa always seems to have some serious issues with ever new item they release. Then they get it figured out and make it better. But those who are early adopters get the short end of the stick. Sorry to hear you had this problem. Thanks for the info.

I have read this before about the UV. When I took it apart the first time my hands turned black. I was like ummmm..

Then I cleaned it and a ton of black came off..

I hope my tank will make a turn around. Maybe this has been my problem. I wonder if just water changes will help?

I can confirm this also. The UV on my frag tank was due for its first bulb replacement so I wanted to check for this. Sure enough it was obvious immediately. The water sloshing alone would result in a gray color. A gentle spray would also leave the water gray. After a rinse a gentle wipe resulted in more black:

It would be extremely helpful for others using a Jebao UV to have the exact model you're using [emoji6]

Also, roughly how long was the unit in operation for before this began to occur?

Mine was the 36W, ordered 12 months ago exactly, almost 24/7 operation. I had not cleaned or checked it before now, so not sure when it started. The inside felt rough, so I suspect it had been breaking down for a while.

Mine is the PU-36 model. It was bought 6 months ago. It’s like melted inside. Crazy!

This can not and should not happen. More crazy they won’t do anything to replace or address the issue.

Mine was the 36W, ordered 12 months ago exactly, almost 24/7 operation. I had not cleaned or checked it before now, so not sure when it started. The inside felt rough, so I suspect it had been breaking down for a while.

This sucks... I wonder what negative effects it has had or will have on my reef tank. I have a few 1,000s inside this tank....

Thanks for the warning. I took my jebao 55 watt version off line after 6 months. I did notice some black residue as well. It did help clear up my dino problem though. Do you think the black residue was causing problems in your tank?

I have recommended that brand of UV to many others for dino problems. Maybe we should recommend that this particular UV should only be used temporarily. My 55 watt jebao was about 1/5 of the cost as my 57 watt aqua uv. The name brand versions are really expensive. I guess that’s nothing new in our hobby.

I bought one of these 36 watt Sun CUV sterilizer for dino's and bacterial blooms.After a few years the center outer center part deteriorated.it got so thin that it split and water pumped out all over.Luckily I was sitting in front of the tank when it happened.

Mine does this too.. same 36w model in the picture above... Was cleaning it sloshing hot water inside it as i cant take the glass tube out its sealed via silicone..

And black water came out.

I havent noticed any corals or fish acting weird though i dont think ? I did habe two dwarf sngelfish die for no reason though... i hsve no ich no velvet.. they just got skinny and died even though one ate all the time.

I have 4 tangs.. a foxface.. 3 damsels.. lots of snails shrimp hermits.. 50 corals mostly sps acros but alot of lps.

I havent nkticed anything with them and thry all grow fine.

So i dunno.. i dont really wanna shut down my uv as i like uv sterilizers... but i turned it off.. I do still have the 24w green killing machine running though but yea..

Jaebo now sells stainless steel sterlizers.. i think they realized the plastic they use is crap and now there making em out of stainless

Normally RVS steel will rust, although there are special types which do not rust quickly but I can imagine they do after some time. Thats why I would never put an RVS heater in the tank, only titanium.
Just bought a jebao and thinking about either sending it back or try to find a way to make the inside UV proof. Not sure how though.
Anyone knows about a coating that would not be affected by UV or saltwater which would allow to coat the inside?

Or anyone who has a UV filter which was confirmed to not be affected by saltwater/UV over long time?

the stainless steel model WILL rust and get tiny pin holes in it. I have mine covered with duct tape. Interestingly enough, ICP tests don't show any metals in my tank.

I ended up going with an AquaUV as I was reading not such great things about the jebaos.

Actually all plastics breaks down under uv radiation.
Some faster than others but they will all deteriorate.
There are some additives that may slow it down but none prevents it completely
