I was planning on buying this for 53G with an eventually heavy bioload.

Is it overkill to the point being a problem?

It may be a bit finicky while you have a light load but this model should not give you an issue once the system has established itself and a good stocking has taken place. The Classic 110 or 110sss may be a better suited for your size tank.
