Decided to document my experience so far in the hopes it helps others answer questions about setting up a tank. I can personally say that this forum and the people in it have helped me tremendously by learning through others successes and unfortunate failures.
So I'll start with my equipment. It's very basic and wanted to keep it as such. I enjoy doing the daily routine tasks that are needed to maintain a great tank. If I didn't I wouldn't consider this a fun hobby. So heres what I got :
Kessil AP700
90 Gallon Low Iron Starfire Rimless tank
30 Gallon Sump with three baffles/sections
Bubble Magus Curve 7
Spectra Pure RO/DI System
Pukani Dry Rock and Fiji Pink Dry Sand
Two Hydor Koralia Evelution 1150
Miracle Mud and Cheto
I set everything up on August 12, 2016. The dead dry pukani rock was carefully cleaned. I washed it and cleaned it with my wife's eyebrow tweezers (she didn't appreciate that). After that I once again rinsed the rock and placed it in the tank. Contrary to what many have said, this rock never gave me phosphates issues.
The tank cycled in about 6 weeks and everything went according to plans. Since then I have added the following fishes :
(2) Cleaner Shrimp
Candy Cane Pistol Shrimp (recently lost his big claw)
Blue Spotted Yellow Watchman Goby
(3) Blue / Green Chromis
White Stripe Maroon Clownfish (male)
Gold Stripe Maroon Clownfish (female)
Fathead Sunburst Anthia
Potters Angelfish
Blue Regal Tang
All fishes were added when they were babies and were in quarantine tanks for a month before being added to the display tank.
Full tank shot
Clownfish with the Sunburst in the background and below him. That's him sideways hiding.
