Joe's 40 Breeder Build progress

Loving this build so far. The peninsula design is great

I wouldn't have thought of a 40B as a peninsula tank ... but you've proven that it can do the job well!

Looking forward to further developments . . .

Thank you guys, wish it was bigger but for now the 40 will have to do :(

I picked up a new friend today, he is currently in QT. A delivery also came so I can hopefully sleep a little quieter tonight. This sump really isn't too quiet with the filter sock placement.

Beautiful fish. Eventually doing a pair or just doing a single one?
I have done both with two of our tanks.

I'm not too sure! I've had a pair before (my avatar) and though I loved having two, I don't like how territorial they get in small tanks once they bond. They don't particularly like it when you go to put your hand in the tank to move anything. Petty I know, so I might change my mind - but for now, just one :)

Quick update, went to RAP this past weekend and scored on some sweet frags. Also got a new light for my frag qt tank which showed up today. Good timing as I broke the socket for the par38 led I was usin before and the bulb dropped into the tank, whoops!

Nicee torch city!! Looks great following for updates. :)
Thanks Andy! Glad to have you following along :) Torches are by far my favorite coral t the moment. I'd love to have the shorter rock in my display just covered in torches, and is probably what I am going to do for now.

I also added a royal gramma to QT on Sunday. Today is the first day he is out and about but is still skittish when I am moving towards the tank. Last night the clown was bullying him for being near his PVC elbow but today it seems like they've worked things out.

I was thinking about getting a gamma myself.... reminds me of finding nemo lol.

New to me - used Skimmer arrived yesterday- the 120. Got it vinegar bathed and completely torn apart for a deep cleaning. Quite a few micro bubbles from this thing but hopefully that changes after it's break in. Maybe I'm just completely skimmer dumb. It is DEAD silent but according to my apex is pulling over 20w which is strange cause it's listed as an 8w pump.

Do it! Such an awesome fish, mine is much more comfortable in his space and is beautiful to watch. Him and the clown are good friends now so I'm hoping that will help when introduced into the DT with the 2 chromis.

I wanted to also get a purple fire fish after these 2 make it through qt but from what I've read he really should have been the first thing in the tank because they are so docile... idk if I should chance it or just steer clear at this point. Any advice?

I trust my LFS and they always have great quality and healthy livestock so I don’t qt them. So if you wanna qt the firefish that’s ok too, but if you want to add them first also your call.

You've got a clown and a small gramma?

I think a purple firefish (bonded / mated pair if you can find 'em) will be OK at this point.

Yeah I have a clown and small gramma that are doing great together in QT. I also have two small blue/green chromis (1 1/4" max) in the DT already. Probably already approaching the max number of fish if I add a purple Firefish, but I also want a Hectors Goby  Think 6 fish might be a little much for a 40B with minimal rock scape? I might have to fill in some rock between the two "islands" so the fish have somewhere to hide if spooked/getting picked on. Especially if I end up adding a typically timid, little firefish.

Given that they're young yet, your bio-filter will have time to grow with them.

Several of those are small and slender throughout their lives, so I think you should be OK. Test your parameters often, let the tank tell you if there's a problem.

The fish I have been receiving from my LFS seem to be in great health as well, but I more so do it as preventative measure. All it takes is one to sneak by and then dire situations come up and my schedule isn't always accommodating so I tend to be a little more on the conservative side. Sometimes I wish I could be a little more lackadaisical because my patience gets tested so often in this hobby, but I think I should stick with whats been working for me.. so far... I was more just curious if you think it would be better for the firefish to enter the DT with only 2 chromis already being there, or would the mix of 2 chromis/clown/gramma be okay for the firefish to be dumped into. Ive just heard that firefish are typically last on the pecking order list so entering the tank with 2 less fish might ease some of the bullying.

Got some more work done today under the tank and am becoming more and more happy with the results. I was also working on the canopy and am absolutely hating how the varnish is turning out. It has been nothing but problems and a lot of sanding and redoing. At this point I wish I had done a water base polyurethane instead of a oil based spar urethane so I could buy a hvlp sprayer and call it done. Might end up sanding it all down and going that route in the end. I'll take and post some pics of the canopy tomorrow, don't even want to look at it right now.

Amazing what an appropriate sized skimmer will do... seems to be working wonders for me already and it's only day 3. I also caved in and set up another QT with both a hectors goby and purple firefish which were doing great till I got home today and the new heater cooked the tank to 84deg when set on 77. Gotta love these reliable pieces of equipment. I watched the temp and heater on/off all day yesterday and it seemed to be working great. I'm not sure how the goby survived it but he seems to be hanging in strong - the fire fish unfortunately wasn't so lucky...
