Jump guard, partial or entire screen? is it worth?

Hi guys, i wanted to do a jumpguard for the fish, but i like something like the aquamedic hopstop that cover only like 5cm over the rim. Is it worth it or is like not having it?

That is similar to a Euro brace for a tank, to support the tank walls, not to stop jumping. If you are getting something to prevent jumping, if it does not cover the entire tank then it is useless. Most of the fish we worry about jumping, yes even clownfish can carpet surf, are excellent escape artists, specifically, any sand sifting goby and dartfish. Ive had fish find a 1 inch gap and still jump out.

Buy a proper screen cover and give your self peace of mind, so you dont find your highly priced small fish turned into a crispy sardine on the floor being batted around by your cat.

ok i'll take note...but this in photo is sold as jump guard, is just 4 pieces of 2mm plexiglass kept toghether by some plastic clips. nothing structural. It's the aquamedic HopStop

Im not saying it wouldnt help, but it wouldnt help LOL. Buy a screen, it will make your life much easier.

Agree, fish will find holes the size of a quarter to jump out of. That edge guard might help keep snails in and that's about it.

IDK if that would even work for snails honestly, I have a tidal 110 HOB on my reef tank and my astreas go in and out of the media part of it. Dont ask me how, but they just do because why not.

When I'm working in my tank I turn my screen lid 90 degrees and rest it on half the tank. Even doing that I've had some close calls with fish darting up and out. I get nervous even walking to the other room for a few seconds if my screen is off.

I had a diamond goby jump out of the tank, thankfully while i was working in the tank. Best time it could happen, so i feel you, I hate having my lid open.

Moral of the story here, buy a screen to protect your investment. We all know how much these creatures cost and try to do our best to give them the best home possible, so lets protect them from themselves and spend the extra 100 dollars and buy a top.

Loved the look of one of my tanks (Waterbox 180) without a lid - no losses for a year (pair of clowns, 2 pyramid butterflies, Bi-color foxface, Copperband, then in the space of a couple of days I lost both clowns (designer clown$$$) and managed to rescue one of the butterflies - all 3 jumped several feet from the tank. Lesson learned - lid on order..

Full Screen would be advised unless you enjoy seeing your expensive fish dead on the floor, it happened to me 2 times was enough to spend the money and get a good lid/screen.

I think we would all love the keep the sleek look of a rimless tank without a lid but if you have fish it's just not worth it. A rimless screen kit can be bought/built for pretty cheap (not sure your tank dimensions) and are about as unobtrusive as you can get. Or you can spend more and get custom acrylic/mesh top that would be even more minimalistic.

Yeah, I'd have to say I agree with everyone aabove. I had two jumpers before I broke and installed a screen on my cube.

The other night I heard a splash and saw my mandarin dragonet had gotten spooked and hit the net instead of becoming psychedelic jerky

I will say that the eurobrace will help more than is being stated - most jumps seem to happen through tight openings which are usually near the edge of the tank...but I would definitely get a top

too late for me, i will try the eurobrace style in hope all will stay inside, while i wait for the net, i am already in the "mounting phase" then i tought to ask here. Will wait more next time. But i must say my tank is a nano and fish wise will have only 2 clown and maybe 1 gramma in future.
