This may be a very slow build process, but I think it’ll be fun! Been out of the hobby for 6 years. I'm still deciding on a tank...Currently between a used Red Sea 250 or a Planet Aquariums 60g cube that I'll build a cabinet for. What's your opinions on this?

I started in Saltwater in 8th grade around 1998-1999 with a 55g, 45# of Fiji live rock from live aquaria, two false percula clowns, and a biowheel HOB......I’ll be 35 next month! I’m in rural Oklahoma so needless to say it was tough finding good stuff and I didn’t know anyone within 100 miles that was interested. I joined Reef Central a few years later and really started learning. Got a 110 a few years after the 55g and had multiple tanks pretty well all the time. Here's a few pics of my first couple tanks to the 220g I had in 2012ish.

Learned a lot about what not to do, but one thing is for certain I was always in to big of a hurry.

Tank will be geared around easier to keep zoas, LPS, and a few choice SPS. I have a full time job, 8 and 10 year old boys, cows, another job, etc...lol

Here's a build list:
One of the two tanks above
Custom stand if the Planet Aquariums tank is purchased
Reef Octopus or similar skimmer
Trigger Systems Ruby Cube if I do the 60 cube
Vortech powerheads, not sure which yet
3 part doser down the line a little
Auto water change later as well
Lighted with an Ocean Revive T247 as I already jumped the gun and bought it...End up with Kessil 360 most likely

My RO and water storage/mixing station is one of the only things I kept after I tore down my last custom Planet Aquariums tanks in 2014~! It was the most valuable part of my system and has been handy for extra water during power outages, etc. It makes water changes, etc a breeze...An auto water change system is going to be in my future I'm sure...

So to date I've gotten some water mixed, grabbed some dry rock and did the BRS TV suggested chlorine cure. It's now in saltwater and fixing to get the process started with Bio Spira and Ace Ammonia. As of about 2 hours ago it's churning and burning. I plan to let it run a few weeks and maybe start a little blue light cycle to get some coralline growing. I'll probably purchase that arc coralline in a bottle. I'll add a few pics.

Stay tuned! Let me know your thoughts on tanks!!

Welcome to R2R! I say go for the biggest tank you can.
;)

Welcome!

For me it would depend on what’s easiest to get wet. The Red Sea would probably get my vote since it is a complete setup compared to the other. However if you’re handy the stand on the other should be an easy build. Perhaps go with the one that has the volume and dimensions you like the best.

RSRs are definitely quick to "get wet", love mine. I'd probably be no where near as far along without it...but then you have a sump and piping not easily modified. As with everything, deciding what you really want is key. Luckily you have experience so would think that'd be much easier for you. Good luck!

I almost feel like by building my own deal I can get a really good sump, custom tank, build a stand, etc. for around the same money. Is that accurate?

How are the Trigger Systems Sapphire sumps?

Cycle rolling along. Ammonia close to 0.25ppm and nitrite over 2ppm I’d say.
Should nitrates be around 10 already?
Also got this in the mail today. Not as fancy as I’d like but read a lot of good reviews on it.

If your 60 is shallow, that would be an ideal way for your boys to handle simple maintenance and get into the hobby with you!

I agree! It may be a little deep for them at this point, but my oldest is already interested. He's my science nerd...lol

Welcome to the R2R family, and welcome back to reefing!
Thank you! I'm hoping to keep engaged and make this a long term project. I think I'm finally mature enough to have one tank and make it legit!

I prefer a nice deep tank. Deep as in front to back not tall. There is more dimension the deeper it is.
Also I have a trigger system sump, but it is the emerald not the sapphire. I love it.

I agree. I really just want something on the smaller size for ease of maintenance, less volume water changes, etc.

Ended up ordering a Trigger Systems Sapphire 20! I don't even have a tank picked out, but I think the equipment is the bestpart, lol.

Well I haven’t advanced very far yet, but I got my rock on a long bacteria growth cycle! Hooking up a fuge and skimmer bucket to get the nitrates down. May run it like this for a few more months. Taking my time and trying to do it right.
Still haven’t decided on a tank. 75g trimmed planet, 90g rimless 3’, or 60g cube

Very nice! I love the “choose your adventure” style build.

Why is your water-mixing station in jail?

Edit: If you can stay away from wrasses etc. I would do a rimless tank!

Thanks! I'm just taking it slow...being picky.

Keep the cat out from under the water station!! lol

I like the dimensions of the 75g...the 90 is 36x24x24..

Got my 5g bucket sump/fuge going good! Let its culture as I decide on a tank. Just poured in some Dr. Tim’s One and Only too!

Still got it just soaking. Nitrates off the charts. I’m beginning to think my cheap test kit is wrong, but it read close to zero at the beginning of the cycle ‍♂️.

I still haven’t decided on a tank, but gonna make a little better setup for playing.

Nice I have a 80 gallon 48x24x16. But I'm building my own tank next 36x30x21 should be fun
