For well over a year my tank was doing great. Everything was growing and healthy. Then my tank started to take a down turn and I could not figure out what the problem was. I checked for stray electricity, parameters seemed in check, and yet corals were dying. Finally, I decided to change some things around and basically start over and this is what I found. AutoAqua Smart ATO used less than 2 years. Purchased from Bulk Reef Supply on July 7th, 2016.

Wow...I just recently found a crack on my interior magnet as well, but it hadn't gotten to the point of yours. It's a shame because I really liked the ATO.

I liked it as well. It is truly disheartening to lose so much over something that should not happen.

I have it too. can we coat it with some kid of polyurethane or glue or something to prevent it from touching water?

I’m not sure. I feel as though it was a quality product and shouldn’t have to worry about it. When I contacted CoralVue about it they just simply stated that there was a bad batch of magnets like it wasn’t a big problem. When I pushed it they said that they just distribute so they can’t do anything else. I just wanted companies that make money off of products to stand behind what they push.

I'm not sure it's worth the risk. I contemplated trying to "fix" mine but ended up going a different direction.

This is exactly why I hang my ato sensor tube thing over my plumbing and into my fuge, instead of using the magnets. It looks ghetto but I’m the only one that sees it lol

This is the part that notifies the auto topoff that the water level is low.

Yes I know that why I use an avast. Anything with a magnet in a sw tank is going eventually corrode and most items made these days are soo cheap they do it quicker than ever.

Oh man, this has got me thinking about my elevated tin reading..;Bookworm

Maybe it’s coming from tunze autotop magnet? I’ve had it for several years, this makes me want to crack it open and check.

I would at least inspect the black housing. As long as there aren't any cracks visable you should be ok.

Wow! Thanks for posting. I've been looking into purchasing this ATO but have changed my mind. Thank you for saving me from this headache!

We need to remember that these big companies are not in it for the fish...or even the consumer. They're in it for the $$$. The only way to turn their big heads is to hit them where it hurts. Spread the word about the defects of this product. When sales go down, the company WILL take notice. Fight back...collectively. Spread the word, peeps!

Same thing with me, I am converting as many magnets to something else to avoid this problem again.

Happened to me as well with an MP40 wetside. Magnet split and rusted. Lost some things but didn’t know the cause. Cleaned my MP40s to find one had split and rusted.

I have several power heads with magnets and several with suction cups. I really liked the ones with magnets, darn. Any ideas about how to convert them? I wonder if I bought suction cup replacement parts if I could somehow attach them to the ones that have magnets? ;Wideyed

No need to convert them. Just set yourself on a routine maintenance schedule and check them during the maintenance. :)

True. I just like the piece of mind not having to worry about it happening down the road, but you're right. They're relatively new power heads, at least two of them are. When I get a few extra bucks, maybe then...

Check your equipment folks, is great advice!

For what it's worth, I have used a autotopoff.com electronic float switch on several of my tanks over the years with no failures. Could mine fail? Yes anything can, but they use no magnets and require very little maintaince. Jmtc.
