Just bought a 75 gallon tank off someone

Hey all:

So I am purchasing a tank off someone and if comes with a decent amount of rock and sand. I am concerned about setting up the tank with rock and sand that has been previously used by someone. Am I just being crazy and there is nothing to worry about or should I not use it? Also is there anyway to clean them of any bacteria that may be present? I know this means I will have to cycle the tank again. Just trying to learn a little before I get started. Thanks all.

I really like live rock so I would feel bad about killing it. Others worry about the rock adding pests.

Likely the best solution is to be patient and keep the rock wet with no fish for at least a month. This will kill most parasites by starving them of a host and it will give you time to see if you notice anything bad. After 1 month if everything looks fine I wouldn't hesitate to use the rock.

Is the rock still in water? If so transfer the rock into a brute trash can with fresh saltwater and a wavemaker. Get rid of the sand and start freah.

Yeah the rock is still in water. About how long would you suggest keeping it in water for? Thanks

Is the rock still "alive?" Is the water warm and have the correct salinity?

What is the condition of the tank its coming from? If its full of algae or undesirables I would clean & re-cycle everything

If it were me, I would ask the person if copper was ever used in the tank, for starters.

Was/is the tank empty or water still in it?

What are your plans for the tank? Fish only, mixed, reef?

I tend not to use someone else's substrate.

Thank you so much for your input. I plan to do a FOWLR. Yeah I understand that it can be more of a headache then it is worth using someone else substrate. Just trying to see my best options here haha thanks all
