My new mp40 doesn't sound like this. Does it need a new dry side or motor? It is a pretty loud whine.

Hi,

I can’t play the vid on my iPad. The mp will make a whine. Sorry I cant hear, so I can’t really help more than that. I will say at the lowest setting it should be quiet. At mid setting maybe a low hum. At high it will give a louder hum. I can hear mine in the next room if there is not a wall separating it from me. Usually the bigger problem is a rumble which indicates the dry and wet are not aligned correctly.

Two thoughts for you. Neither of which are in the instructions but can be found deep with the tech support stuff on the Ecotech website.

First, the wet side and dry side need to be aligned well. You may want to move the wet or dry side to see if there’s an alignment problem.

Second, Ecotech recommends a two week “break in“ period where you run the pump at low speed and slowly increase the speed over time. My guess is that this is about parts breaking In or getting seated. I ran my new MP40 in steady mode at a very low speed for two weeks. Then switched to long pulse mode and raised speed.

Use a food grade silicone lube on the ceramic shaft as well, just a tiny bit, don't go crazy. I was told this by Ecotech Support.... my MP-40'S ran great. New ones have a tiny bit of this lube at the base of the ceramic shaft. LOL. Keep them clean.

I sold them however for the Maxspect Gyre XF-250's

If it’s a ‘whine’, them most likely coming from the dryside motor. If it’s new, then let it break in a bit. If still whining then contact ETM.

I bought it used on these forums which is why I asked. I payed $275 and new dry side is like $180ish

Oh, I see .... thus the perils of overpaying for used. Assuming it’s a quiet drive model, then the motor really should be almost inaudible. Not uncommon for folks to get some water inside the motor assembly which quickly degrades it.

Yeah I have a new mp40 and it was loud the first week with a him, not high pitched like this. I sent them a PM but haven't heard anything back. For a little more I could of had a brand new onw

In your sound clip, I thought I heard ticking.
Not sure if that's what you are referring to.
Too much other background noise to be sure.

The problem I see with buying something like a used MP10/40 is one persons quiet could be totally unacceptable to another person. So this could be what the seller considers quiet.

My 1 year old dry sides have a slight hum now. I didn't notice that until I just went to check them just now.
Also it was mentioned to make sure the wet side and dry dry are perfectly in line with each other.

My two brand new MP-40QD's dry and wet side are dead quiet and are still dead quiet seven weeks later. Now the power bricks on the other hand are pretty noisy.

I concluded a while back there’s little value in buying used vortech pumps. People want too much for them and get all insulted if you ‘lowball’ them. A saw a two year old QD MP40 and offered half ($180); he laughed and suggested $300; I laughed and waited for a 10% sale and bought it new.

If you are so inclined, it might be worth taking the dryside apart to see if there’s any sign of water intrusion/corrosion.

I saw a thread where someone replaced the dry side bearings with skateboard bearings. Read that the bearings vortech uses are not very good quality, which would explain their "break in" as the balls in the bearings polish against the races.
