hey guys I'm just starting up my 100 gallon tank the rock that came with this tank is dry so I need to cycle this rock and reseed it I heard that I should put a hardy fish like a damsel, or clown along with a piece of good live rock,,and let it sit for about 3 months does that sound right

You wait 3 months before adding fish, but if you use live sand it gets rid of the need to cycle, I would get 120 lbs of it the best is the CaribSea Ocean Direct Live Sand, and use good salt, the best salt brand is the Instant Ocean I didn't really like reef crystals, and Red Sea coral pro salt causes algae blooms

Sure a hardy fish could survive the break in period but they be under alot of stress so why chance it. Most people now at days use household ammonia or the raw shrimp methods to start the cycle. And no fishes are ever harm that way. What i did was bought a Seachem ammonia alert, injected 5cc of ammonia into the tank and 15 minutes later check the Seachem testeter to see if it has changed color. If it hasn't changed color add more ammonia to the tank till it changes color. Once it does change color don't add anymore till it goes back to the original Seachem color. Do this till it is fully cycled. Then add fish.

You are going to get some different opinions.
My opinion....I do not recommend any fish until you have use one of several methods to cycle your tank. The best way to seed your dry rock is with some live rock. I personally am not a fan of live sand.

My best recommendation is to read and search out methods and make your own decision.

Some valid methods:
> ammonia (pure ammonia not house hold)
> table shrimp
> Dr. Tim's "One and Only"
> Ghost Feeding
