Hi all,

I took the wife and kids to look at a marine store (Mr. Aqua) a couple of days ago just to kill some time before doing a family thing. The kids of course loved it and the wife actually started asking about how much it would cost to setup a tank. She even picked out a spot in the house for it!

So, now I'm hitting all the forms and websites to do some research. I'm sure I'll have lots of questions, but I'll ask those in their own thread and after I have read some more.

You should check out the local clubs - Marine Society of Colorado (MASC) and Southern Colorado Marine Aquarium Society (SCMAS) there are a lot of cool guys on the forums there and equipment and livestock sale threads.
Good luck with your new tank!

Decide your budget first. How much can you afford to throw down now and in the future for upgrades and upkeep?

First question is how many kids? 2nd Do you plan on sending those kids to college some day? If yes to the 2nd question, then you might want to reconsider. :squigglemouth:

Truthfully, you will love it & so will the kids. My biggest problem is telling my wife "No we can't get that." She wants everything.

You have come to the right place. The people here are awesome, knowledgeable & very helpful.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.

The wife came to her own conclusion as to what she thinks it would take to setup a decent tank (and that would be doable for us), turns out it was what I was thinking as well. That number was $2500. I know hobbies have a way of growing, but right now we are looking at this as more of a center piece in one of our rooms. Even if we eventually want to go with a larger tank (the area we have now for the tank is 4' wide, up to 2' deep, with 10' ceilings), we don't have a place in the house for it (I don't see us redoing are house around a tank in another room). So, upgrade would be limited to better equipment or pricier fish. I think those we can easily do as needed down the road.
