I have a 300 gal and today I wake up to a tank full of died fish . I'm heart broken I have no idea what happened everything looked great last night . Well I'm sad to say this but I'm done I cant do it anymore I'm so defeated...I guess this is good bye to reefing for me .

I'm terribly sorry for your loss.

Losing pets never gets easier especially when you loose them all at once. If you do leave then we'll be sad to see you go but I get it. If you change your mind or want to get to the bottom of it then let us know and we'll do our best to help you through it.

I can sympathize due to losing an entire tank to ich once. I know it's incredibly discouraging when something like this happens.

I would implore you not to sell your equipment, at least immediately. I would strongly suggest giving it a few months and seeing how you feel. I personally took a four month break before restarting.

Do you have any idea what may have caused it? I'm no expert by any means but it kinda sounds like stray voltage.

Sorry to hear your news. It is never easy to loose your pets. I lost my tankful of freshwater fish a year ago on Father’s Day. I was devastated. I debated for many months. I finally rebuilt a month ago. I remember how stressed I was when I added the first fish. I am glad I did it.

Give yourself some time, and see how you feel in a little while. Although the hobby has its downs - sometimes huge ones - overall you may feel that the ups make up for it. I have a friend, who after loosing his dog, decided never to get another pet since the pain was too great to handle. I found that I’d rather suffer through the inevitable loss if it means I can experience all the joy a pet brings. After some time you’ll know what will work for you. I wish you the best.

I cant be sure either my cucumber nuked the tank or maybe toxic dinos? If that even a real thing I have no idea but I'm heart broken I have had my sailfin for 5 years she was my first fish and I lost a bicolor fox face and a metallic fox face I'm so torn I can't imagine not being the crazy fish lady I love this hobby it's truly my passion

So very sorry to hear. Please don't give up! You love it!

I’m sorry for your loss, I know that has to be extremely heartbreaking. Maybe take some time to grieve and heal before deciding to call it quits. It sounds like you really enjoy this hobby (in spite of the hardships). I can attest to the fact that once it’s in your blood, it rarely leaves. I hope you have a blessed day and find some comfort. Be well!

Again, sorry to hear. Did anything live? I think you should stick with it, but I also think that tracking down the most likely cause is important. 300g is a huge volume for something like a critter death causing a nuke. Do you have dosers? Heater controllers that might have failed? Did you add anything recently or change anything? Stray electricity from a device? Could someone else have done something while you weren't looking?

I ask this because we had people over the house once that had a kid who was 8-10 at the time. I told him very politely that sticking hands in the water was off limits. I came around the corner not 10 minutes later and he had both arms over the side of my 60g rimless cube. I nearly swatted him myself! Needless to say, that never happened again.

Did you use any chemicals nearby? I hear that fabreeze, for example can be very toxic to marine critters. A recent water change? Do you use RODI or tap? We've had a couple instances where our tap water had elevated H2S in it - could smell it right out of the tap. Both instances occurred when work crews were doing something with the pipes near the house.

As bad as this sucks, I think some solace might be found in diagnosing the most likely cause.

So many questions lol but I will try to answer them so yes I had just added a copperbanded butterfly from qt and did a water change using treated tap water all equipment is good to go and no stray voltage but I did just have an out break of some kind of algea I was assuming diatoms but now I'm thinking maybe dinos. I have heard as they die off they can leave toxic chemicals behind do u find this to be true ? Sorry if I missed anything

When you say treated tap water exactly what do you mean? Is it city water, well water? If city did you treat for chloramines? Some cities add these at seasonal changeovers so please inquire with your municipality if on city water. With that volume an RODI would be a wise investment if you stay in the hobby.

I use water conditioner to remove chlorine and carbon and gfo and let it sit but I have been looking in to rodi systems

Sorry for your losses, I can't even imagine...

You mentioned the sea cucumber and I've resisted getting one for just this reason. I'm not good enough at this stuff to say he's what did it, but I think it's possible he may have had something to do with this.

I feel like I've seen quite a few similar threads where either the cucumber did it, or something else started a chain reaction that killed the cucumber and then it nuked the entire tank.

So sorry again, I do hope you rejoin our ranks and that we can help you recover from this.

ugh! so very sorry to hear this! my stomach is turning comprehending the scope of yr loss. ;Inpain

what type of cucumber did you have? just one?

Omg I am so sorry! I cant imagine! I hope this all gets figured out! Dont lose hope!

Let's try to focus on one thing at a time so we're not pulling in tendrils from all over trying to get a handle on this. Let's think about your water first.

How big of a water change did you do, and what was the timing of the water change in relation to your terrible loss (how far before the event was your W/C)? Is your tap from a well or from a city? Big city? Small city? Have you tested any parameters on your tap water before mixing up your salt water? Have you ever noticed periods when your tap water was not drinkable? Do you live in an older house? Can you pull the most recent water quality report for your municipality, or link to it?
