I must have fat thumbed the dosing pump app and toggled pump 3 as “on” while I was reprogramming pump 1. Came back from lunch to a cloudy white tank and a empty alkalinity reservoir. D013DCAD-7948-413C-8315-E81CAAFF6252.jpeg

Most of the Coranow has burn marks on it. Mandarin and lettuce sea slugs dead. Snails are alive but not well. Fingers are crossed for my goby mandarin pair but my clownfish seem fine.

I was finally winning my battle with Dino’s and this happens.
Lesson learned don’t mess with settings remotely.

I expect to lose the Duncan the acans and several sps. :(.

The loss you’ve just incurred could have paid for an Apex EL or Hydros x4, both decent and both has pH probe. Consider that as your next purchase. If you have room for a powerhead, you have room for the probe

As a bonus it’ll protect you also from the runaway heater problem that will melt it tank.

OP sorry for your losses

How is a PH probe mandatory for alk dosing? I'm new to the hobby and have recently started alk dosing small amount daily. So would like to know the importance of this...thanks

Alk can raise pH. So a pH probe will catch a runaway calc dosing problem. If it’s manually dosing then not as big a deal.

Do you have a pH probe? A must if you’re dosing alk. Sorry for your loss
It’s not a must. The idea that you need controllers and probes to dose basic reef supplements is absurd. That’s not to say they’re not useful, but definitely not a requirement. People have been dosing their tanks for decades without out controllers and probes. Personally I think people, especially people new to the hobby, maybe automate and depend on their controllers too much.

I said if you’re manually dosing then you don’t need one. But if you’re automating you need a way to protect yourself. That’s where a controller is vital

Sorry for the loss. Been there before with a runaway doser before. Leave the coral in there for a while and watch for life. I had a lot come back from what looked like white skeletons.

I’ve gotten my alk to over 20 dkh with no losses albeit not as suddenly, a major swing like this I would let fall naturally and just be doing rodi topoff for a week or two

Please be checking for ammonia. If fish or other inhabitants are still dying, they can foul up your water in a hurry. Seachem ammonia badge is a good cheap investment

Start snowing a little more after that huh…My first tank I had huge Alk, very hard to lower. In my experience

It does depend on the tank and consumption in my case I can lose .5 dkh a day so I just wait it out

The best way to protect yourself is by manual dosing and manual testing. Probes are only as good as the person willing to do routine calibration and testing of them.

Also, it makes it easy for a person with a naturally low PH tank to chase it with a buffer or alk and way overdoses .

PH probes are great for a quick reference but I always use mine with a side of caution.
