Just ordered some miracle mud for the fuge. thoughts?

kinda new to the hobby (1 and a half) but i am on my second tank about 100 gallons of total water. i was told at the beginning 1 piece of rock no substrate would be fine for the fuge. seeing now i some mangroves and stuff down there i but miracle mud. anyone have any thoughts on it???

I haven’t heard great things about it, but a few people swear by the stuff. I’ve never tried it myself.

Put it in small containers like tupperware. Add the containers slowly. Cuts down on the silt/cloudy conditions.

Well I called at LFS for a 5kg bucket of rhowaphos and ended up coming out with some kelp to grow, a sump LED (i already have one! lol) and a pot of Miracle Mud!

The LFS was raving about it so it’s in my sump in a new refugium. It’s in a plastic sandwich box with some kelp to grow on top

I’ve now been reading up on it and it looks like it releases trace elements (I already use Red Sea Coral Colours etc) and it also looks like it harbours denitrification bateria, and I have plenty of that already. So I probably don’t need it, won’t notice a difference.........

I’ve been trying to read up on it but there isn’t that much specific data or reviews on it, just rather ‘vague’ reviews and comments. A bit like mine! Lol

Anyway I leave it in place until it gets in the way or I get bored of it, and report if I think anything of it, or it makes any difference.

This is maybe what happens when your tank is running fine, but you just need to ‘fiddle’ with things and then end up at the LFS!

Miracle mud, Fiji mud and silt in the sand are all good for growing seagrass. It holds nutrients that allow seagrass and various organisms that live in the sand to strive. Folks want a super clean tank but that created a poor environment for life to grow while the ocean water is teeming with life. The ocean floor is not pure sand but mud and silt which gives life to organisms that live in both sand and water .

That's what I hear. I saw it as something different that could be used in the sump since I had already cycled the tank without any substrate down there, just a piece of live rock.

I cut a few holes for circulation of water in the box.

I also took the sandwiches out! Lol

+1 ^^^^ this exactly. Really helps as when you may want to move things around as you adjust your fuge over time.

I kept 15 to 20 pounds in the fuge section of my sump for 2 years (changing as recommended) but didn't notice any difference and my mangroves do fine without it.

It hopefully will do good for your system.

so if were just to dump it in the fuge it would make it's way around the sump and to the display? wouldn't it be difficult to try and grow mangroves when it's a set up like that?

Yes...I deleted my long comment as It was not directed at me and didn't want to step on anyone's toes.

I put the filter floss in the small baffled section bubble trap before the return pump of the sump. It collected what little there would have been going into the return section and possibly the DT.

40lbs of miracle mud and we love it. I just got rid of a bunch of the mangroves and cheato. It seemed to perk up colors of corals and anemones seemed way happier after it was added
