Just pulled this outta my tang

Not sure what this splinter is. At least I hope it’s a splinter! It’s taken about 7-10 days since I first noticed it to catch him. In that period maybe 1/4” more of it has been protruding. Best guess either a mangrove splinter or he tried to eat a loose chunk of root?

Hoping for a full recovery!!

Are you sure that's a splinter? Looks more like a broken bone that broke skin..

It looks to round and to uniform in shape to be a splinter, break a mangrove and see how the splinters look. I agree that weirdly it looks more like a bone. Strange one. Also has he got most of his fin missing

Looks like a bone to me.... do his fins look floppy some where?? I’d guess from a pectoral fun based on the shape

Yes, his dorsal and pectorals have been missing for a few years. Not sure what I did in that old tank 6 years ago but he lost those. My wife as FW tank had the same issue. ‘Must be something in the water’...

Yeah, that adds up. I did have a stray voltage issue for a while back then. Hmmm... wonder if that could be related to a rib poking out several years later? (Also, why would a fish bone be brown?!)

Oh, one other idea - if it were one of his own ribs perhaps broken during the tank move back in early June? Took a few months to work up and out? Does that make a new tang Adam and Eve style?

One week later and all seems well! He’s still got a tiny dark spot where the issue was, but seems to be healing up nicely. Eating well and up to his usual daily routine...
