Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum and also new to saltwater systems. Me and my wife just started a 5 gal tank about a month ago which has 3 corals, a clownfish, and a peppermint shrimp. We just bought an oceanic 70g tank and plan on setting that up in the coming months. As we are new to the trade any tips or ideas would be very helpful. I look forward to reading a lot of good info from this site.

My advice is to go slow. Lots of new reefers rush things and end up with disaster. Let your new tank cycle and add specimens slowly. A reef is a ecosystem and it has to become one through acclimation. Keep it simple and stick to the basics. Test ,test and test your water parameters . Keep everything in check and do your regular water changes and most important don't overfeed. That is where most people get in trouble when starting out. Your fish will do great without dumbing a bunch of food into your tank. Good luck and enjoy.

Thanks. I definitely plan on taking your advice on going slow. The LFS I go to said when I set up the 70g I should let it sit for 3 months after putting the live rock and sand in as this time period is when most people get all the bad algae. Has anyone else heard of that too? I think it would be very beneficial for my tank if I did that but hard because I always love adding new things.

Welcome to R2R! Patience is the key for sure. The slower the better, especially with a tank that's only 5 gallons. They are so delicate and sensitive to changes. As for the LFS's comment on three months, I have never heard that specifically, but I choose to wait for sure on fish for at least 8 weeks. I usually add critters sooner, but in the event that there is any disease present in your live rock or whatknot, most can't live that long without a fish host. Not sure if that's 100% ture, but that's my theory. I have found the more patient I am the most success I have had. I currently run two tanks that I have been so slow with and my problems are minimal compared to when I was impatient, irresponsible and rushing. Can't wait to hear about your progression.
