I upgraded to a 100 gallon tank and the tank i have currently is around a 45. Should i add the water live rock and all my bio media .into the new tank and the fish immediately or should i start from scratch and cycle it. I have been told if i add the live rock from my old tank and the bio media i should be good to go. Just seeing what everyone else thinks.

Theoretically you can add you rock and bio media to the new tank with the fish and get away with it. Some things to consider..... you might get a mini cycle from the tank transfer or anything you stir up in the move. If you have sand in your 45 don’t reuse it but new sand. If you do move everything at once have saltwater made and ready to go Incase you see any ammonia spikes. Don’t forget to add no bio media/ and or rock as you add more fish. Your bio media is equipped to handle your current stock of 45 not 100. I would put the fish in a container with a heater and air stone, take the bio media and rock and get it in the new tank and wait a few hours. Let everything settle take a round of baseline test. If all is well add the fish back in and continue to test. At the first sign of ammonia do a water change. Try to limit the exposure to air when you move the rock and bio media. Less exposure to air the less die off, the less die off the less chance of having a mini cycle

Take you time and plan it all out so your ready to handle any possible issues!

You are facing the exact same dilemma I had back in November, I had no choice but to transfer all my current live stock into the new tank and then add everything else later as the old tank was sitting exactly where the new tank needed to go and I had already sold the old tank to help pay for the new one. The problem that you have is that you are going to need to add more rock if you want the benefits of a larger tank and the new rock will need to be cycled unless you have the additional rock coming from an established tank from someone that you trust. For that reason I recommend cycling the additional rock separately and then once it is good to go then doing the whole transfer at once to minimize the stress on your current live stock.

did everything make it in your tank

did everything make it in your tank

I lost a few snails and I'm not sure if it was directly related (as it was a few months later and I added 50lbs of live rock, which definitely could've stressed the heck out of it), but I did ultimately lose my first Diamond Watchman Goby. I transferred: A Cleaner Shrimp, A Juvie Melanurus Wrasse, A Diamond Watchman Goby and a handful of snails and hermit crabs. The Cleaner Shrimp and the Juvie Wrasse are still going strong.
