I am so bummed out right now! I started my first salt water tank a little over a year ago because I took over a established but very neglected 29 BioCube. It was in very bad shape and had many scratches on the glass because of the original owners not caring and scratching it up with a magnet cleaner. I had to strip it completely because of toxins and start fresh including run a fish in cycle ~ talk about baptism by fire . Well after the last year I have a very IMHO beautiful tank full of coral and fish. I have multiple tanks now but the first has remained my MDT. This week the scratches finally got to me enough and after months of my husband saying that the glass is too distracting and I need to Just get a new tank and transfer everything into it I pulled the plug and ordered a BioCube 32 to upgrade to. I have never bought a tank new other then my pico and FW DT and I am not one to spend money impulsively so it took a lot of thought and anxiety but I did It. I get the tank home box is perfect sides and everything looked great till I get it out and find a blemish in the bottom glass. It is almost like the glass formed wrong so I can not risk putting water in and having a blow out. I called and my Petco was actually very nice, apologetic and even though they are not allowed to do any returns or exchanges because of QT said that they will swap it out asap. Only issue they will not be getting a new one in until at the earliest Wednesday. I am not mad and staff was very sweet, I am just very disappointed that now I am staring at a new tank In my front room and can not do anything about it. My anxiety was already through the roof about the swap over and my coral but this is not helping! Thanks for listening to my rant.

Setbacks can definitely be tough. Sounds like you have a great handle on the situation and a great mindset with it. Im glad your local people were understanding. That always helps...

You just can’t get a break! At least you caught it while the tank was empty!
I know we had already said we would fill it with fresh and water test before anything goes in so we know all seams are good, well didn’t even get that far.

Yeah when I called the manager was like oh no I pulled that order for you the Box looked great! When I explained what was wrong with it he was just happy we found out before anything happened

Look at it this way...
This is a better “setback” than having a living room full of water.
I’d wait the 5 days!
Oh yeah that is why I checked it with a fine tooth comb

I agree with better to wait it out then be in a mess with a broken tank.

Tank upgrade. I just started reading through this thread. While you are waiting on your tank, might be a good read on how to go about your upgrade. IMOP it make sense and can help with the move. just takes some planning, that you have time for now while waiting for your swap out tank. Would hate to see your upgrade give you more greef...

I am switching over my upgrades frim my 29 i was already running an upgraded system on it filtration and flow modifications only other modifications to go into it would be lighting but that is still being decided on. I will be taking the extra time to Decided if maybe i want to change up my scape a bit though. I do need to permanently attach a base on my tall rock to make it more stable.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. As someone with a formal anxiety disorder diagnoses, I know what it's like to have that crippling feeling. With the unique times we're in, I've found my anxiety over "waiting for someone or something" has been exponentially worse over the past couple of months.

So hey, let's look at the positives... so happy Petco is doing the right thing. And most importantly... your husband encouraged you to get a new tank. Many of us can only dream of having a spouse who encourages us to buy more stuff for our hobby. lol

Good luck and keep us posted!

Thank you most people do not understand anxiety over purchasing things when you have the money to do it. I grew up in a situation where we thought we were pretty hard up and it was because my mother spent a literal fortune on her collections. I have severe anxiety now about spending money on anything for myself or hobbies. I feel like I am taking away from my family as stupid as that sounds. I am constantly searching best prices, figuring out how to make it myself to save money, searching bargains or hustling to negate purchases for my hobbies. Having to wait now, not having it setup and done is making me regret and rethink the whole thing. My husband doesn’t get that I can not enjoy a hobby that I can not make money off of. I train dogs because I enjoy it, but I also have built a good side business out of it. I just sold my first corals to negate the cost of this cube because I shouldn’t hold on to extra I can make money off of if I need to buy stuff for the hobby. It is sweet that he encouraged the purchase but it only helps ease the anxiety of a larger ticket item purchase a small amount. I hope with everything going on you can find some relief from your anxiety on waiting as well, I have an item that was bought over two months ago that hasn’t come and it is killing me so I definitely understand. Best wishes and thank you for understanding.

I can relate very well to your particular anxiety with money. Though my father made decent money, he was very strict about how we spent money. We were a solid middle class family, but my sister and I both thought we didn't have much money. It wasn't until our mid to late teens when we started understanding that my father was a strict saver. But the damage was already done and his financial impressions were already made upon us. Now over 20 years later, both my sister and I have many of the similar shopping traits you described. And having time to think about your purchase afterwards can not only cause buyers remorse (as typical people would deal with)... but crippling anxiety that eats away at you. I totally get it... and it's not fun at all.

Funny thing is... I did not know I suffered from anxiety disorder until 5 years ago when I came down with a strange, unknown stomach illness. I thought the feelings I had were feelings everyone felt. I went on anti-anxiety medication, but that only made my anxiety and my mental well being even worse. I eventually got a genetic test done that showed I could not take any mental health-related medicine. So instead, I went through intensive mental health therapy over the last several years which has taught me how to control and manage my anxiety.... most of the time. :)

This hobby can definitely challenge those of us who suffer from anxiety. From a financial perspective to the whole waiting and patience to all the stress it can cause. But I love it so much, I use it as an opportunity to work on my anxiety.

I'm sorry you have to deal with everything you're going through. Try to take it a day at a time... perhaps try staying away from the tank as much as possible until Wednesday if possible? Feel free to DM if you'd like. Would be glad to listen and help you get through to Wednesday. After everything I've been through these last 5 years, I now am a strong advocate for mental health... and with it being Mental Health Awareness Month, I would be glad to help out a fellow reefer.

That is so beyond sweet of you! Same thing thought we were barley middle class It wasn’t till like 13 when I seen a check stub did the math and realized my dad cleared six figures a year! I couldn’t understand until I started paying attention to the amount my mom spent a week. Having a house under major construction and my moms spending zapped it all. Unfortunately my father was one of those I make the money you pay the bills types. Poor guy could never figure out how we were not swimming in it. I can not take anything for my anxiety either, it messes with me really bad. I had to find other ways to calm myself and I used to fight Mixed martial arts to blow off steam. I fought my whole life in martial arts but after being a mom and being told I cannot be coming home with marks anymore it has come back at times.
This hobby demands attention so my mind doesn’t wander. So that does help a lot while causing some other issues lol. I have always taken pride in caring for things and have snakes and pets of all types. So this goes along with that
Being on lockdown still from work is hard along with the whole family getting to one another So like many I am sure it is not helping.
Same on my end I am always happy to be a sounding board.

So update “the boys tank” Which really just happens to be a second tank They pick everything for but I still have to do all heavy maintenance on with their “help” Sprung a small leak... more of a drip... but either way guess who had the pleasure of buying and setting up two new 32 BioCubes in a week? I did find a killer deal on a basically new mint condition one for the other tanks replacement. I feel like I have a horrible hangover after four days straight inside tanks for over 12 hours each day. But now no tanks should need any upgrades or anything for a very long time unless I get new lights. On to snake tank cleaning and FW in the morning.

@JJ Ligs, I just got done reading the whole thread and I fully understand how you feel! I wrote some articles covering some of the emotions of the hobby for reef2reef. To coin a phrase from my first article, "Your definitely not on a island" by yourself feeling the way you have.

These are some of the most trying times for all of us! You're not alone!
Great community we have here! Lots of love and understanding! ♥️

Thank you for posting your feelings and hang in there! We are here for you! :)

Thank you so much for the support and links I will definitely check them out. Being a person who takes high pride in taking the absolute best care of animals and people I care about this hobby can be very stressful. I get upset when a crab eats one of my snails because everything has a name In our tanks because it is a valid life. My poor family will wake up to me yelling at my hermit crab Jag to leave snuffy alone or whomever he has chosen to bully that day. But for the most part this has brought me great joy, the last two weeks super stressful but still wouldn’t change it.

Thanks for the update! Sorry to hear you had to set up a second tank, but I imagine it also kept you busy enough to help pass the time a bit quicker?

Do we get to see some pics of the new tanks?

Great articles @Flippers4pups!!! There are many great points that I can personally relate and attest to. I wonder how many other people here on R2R use their tanks for therapy... even if it's as simple as a minute of mindfully enjoying the tank every day.
