As mentioned in the title. .
I picked up a juv emperor angelfish on the weekend
Typically juv are generally easy to feed , but this particular one doesn’t seam to be eating much other than the off piece of frozen mysis he gets .
Any suggestions ?
@vetteguy53081 i hope you also have a good suggestion

have you tried a home made frozen mix mine started with that wouldn’t eat anything else. Now it eats everything. Agree with algae sheets mine devours them. Or if you have sponges on your rock or sump scrape them off and try that.

I’ve never had a issue with a juv emperor eating .
I add purple seaweed on 2 clips .
tangs and foxface love them
I’ve caught the new guy picking but not really eating .

It may take some time, but unless I’m desperate, I make sure I see all my fish eat well at the store (not just picking or nibbling). It may be stress that they don’t eat, but it could be something worse (injury, infection, illness, etc.)

Nevertheless, your best bet is to try a varied diet and see what he’s most attracted to (brine, mysis, nori, sponges, pellets, mixed food, etc). Then feed that a Lot to him until he settles down before transitioning to other food

They are finickyl

These fish are finicky to begin with as juveniles.. enticing them may or may not work. Triggering interest is key for them
Everyone is going to find a niche. Mine was LRS herbivore diet.
SPURULINA BRINE SHRIMP, plankton, angel formula by Hikari are other options.
Also assure no issues with water such as elevated ammonia, nitrate, ph, salinity and temperature. Other would be intimidation from other tank mates without your knowledge.
How was fish acclimated and for how long ?

Acclimation was 45 mins floating .
and a slow drip 1.5 hours

salinity at the lfs was lower ( 1.019)
Mine is 1.024

he seams to be doing well other than I haven’t seen it come out to eat like the other tank mates .
Most angelfish recognize us as a food source and come out when they know we are at rhe tank .
this one goes behind the rocks .
it does pick at the rocks , eats mysis ,

I know I have tons of yellow sponge and algae on rocks and tank .
Nitrates are 5ppm

I just picked one up he didn’t eat for the first 2-3 days until I removed my blue tang for being aggressive. Even then at first showed no interest. I use a turkey baster with spirulina mysis only putting in a few pieces at a time and he eats like crazy, also try a veggie clip and cut the nori into very small strips

Here is something to consider doing-
You are correct that fish know our presence and will hold out when we are watching. Prepare a feeding and set your cell phone on video mode and feed, record for 20 mins and walk away - Must walk away
Return 20 mins later and review video.
You will be able to see if it eats in your absence and if any fish are intimidating him.
