I’ve always heard anemones hosting clowns takes time. Is the reasoning behind this because juvenile clowns don’t need a place to lay eggs? Or do juvenile clowns live in anemones? At that point is it common or luck?

It’s a relationship called symbiosis and it’s up to the anemone to either accept or sting the clown.
sometimes dropping food into anemone will place the clown into acceptance.
It’s the anemone that’s the host and clown is the guest

I have had young ones go in an anemone at 1” size

Really? Okay that was my question. I think it’s more of luck because I’ve been researching all day and it seems to be the mature ones that go in the nems and people always say it took like a year before they did. And I’ve come to the conclusion it’s a maturity issue

In my experience, I have four little ones I’m raising right now from a first attempt hatch I had. At day 76 I introduced anemones to all four and only three are hosting the anemones right now. They aren’t 1” just yet so I’m not sure if I just got lucky with these little guys hosting so early

That’s so cool! You know what I mean though? Or is my hypothesis way off?

It has nothing to do with maturity. The clownfish that I raise go to their natural host anemones at a few weeks old (when they’re first introduced). I’ll see if I can dig up a few videos.

Here are a few baby onyx clowns going to a gigantea anemone immediately upon introduction (they darted into it as soon as they were released into the tank).

Clownfish naturally go into their host anemone as soon as they reach metamorphosis. If a clownfish isn't going into an anemone its usually because the anemone is not a natural host of that species.

There's often talk about tank-raised clownfish "not knowing" what an anemone is, and it's absolutely false.

So that’s why bta and ocellaris is a hit and miss

yes juvenile clowns live in anemones! clowns like anemones no matter how old they are, they need anemone to protect them instinctively.

Studies of the behaviour of wild fish, shows juvies are guided towards anemones by sent traces left around by adult fish. I guess tank raised juvies just have their own individual experiences and levels of need, to follow their instincts of seeking the security of anemones.

The tank raised polymnus I keep, were kept in an anemone holding tank by the LFS and they were completed used to nems. Although LTAs are not the most favourite choice of anemones for polymnus, they slept in a LTA from the first day I introduced them into my tank. The smallest was only 30 days old at the time.
